This one-day workshop is an opportunity to learn, explore, and collaborate around the Create and Respond strands of the new K-12 Arts anchor standards and Music benchmarks. Together, we will:

  • Dig deep into the anchor standards and benchmarks – what do they mean in your classroom?
  • Try out a variety of experiences that address K-12 Create benchmarks
  • Try out more experiences that address K-12 Respond benchmarks
  • Develop assessment criteria, rubrics, checklists for these experiences

Take away practical ideas for your classroom!

  • One hour is planned for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or head out to a nearby fast food restaurant.

This day is a unique opportunity to inform your teaching practice through peer observation and includes an introduction to the new Minnesota Academic Standards in the Visual Arts. To accomplish this,

1) We will observe Regional Arts Teacher-Leader Cheri Weber teach her second and third grade Visual Arts classes. Teachers will get to see critical response techniques, inquiry instructional strategies, assessment techniques, and learn about ways Rockford Elementary Arts Magnet School integrates arts throughout its curriculum.
2) Following the observation, Jeremy Holien will facilitate a discussion of our observations and later introduce you to the new Minnesota Academic Standards in the Visual Arts.

You will take away new ideas and strategies for your classroom, plus have a better understanding of how the new Visual Arts standards relate to the classes you teach.

  2. Following class and rehearsal, Wendy Barden will facilitate a discussion of our observations and details in the new MN music standards.

Take away new ideas and strategies for teaching your high school instrumental music classes, plus a better understanding of new Music standards relative to the classes you teach.

WORKSHOP PRESENTER:

John Schreiber has taught and directed theater for over 40 years, recognized by META as Theater Educator of the Year, served on the MSHSL One-Act Play Advisory Committee, and judged the state one-act. For the certification portion of the workshop, Jerry Girten, rules clinician for the MSHSL One-Act Play, will present and explain judging procedures. By attending this session, attendees will be certified to judge the one-act play.

DESCRIPTION:
Learn how to use Finale music notation software to create, edit and print music/teaching materials for use in your music program. This “hands-on” workshop with sequential step-by-step instruction is for the Finale beginner or infrequent user. Topics include: Score set-up, fast note entry, adding expressions, markings and lyrics, time-saving shortcuts, page layout, transposing/printing instrument parts, exploring Finale’s ready-to-use worksheets and classroom tools, and ways to share your music with others.

  • There is no cost to participate.
  • One hour is planned for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or head out to a nearby fast food restaurant.
  • A certificate for 5 clock hours will be distributed at the end of the day.

  • LAPTOP COMPUTER (Windows or Mac) with Finale v25 or v26 installed or the 30-day free trial version downloaded at http://www.finalemusic.com/free-trial/ Note: Finale will not work on Chromebooks.
  • POWER ADAPTER and HEADPHONES or earbuds for your computer.
  • OPTIONAL: For fastest note entry, bring a 2 or 4 octave USB plug-and-play MIDI controller keyboard. No full-size keyboards, please.
WORKSHOP PRESENTER:

Our presenter is Mavis Kallestad, a Finale music notation software clinician/trainer and piano accompanist in the Twin Cities. For the past 12 years, she has represented MakeMusic, the manufacturer of the software, at numerous state music conventions and has taught hands-on Finale workshops to music educators and worship musicians in 20 states. Her textbook, Building Successful Finale ‘Chops’, contains practical step-by-step tutorials for notating musical scores and teaching materials with Finale. She holds a Music Education degree from Dickinson State University and is an adjunct faculty member at Hamline University.
