Perpich music student wins national American Composers Forum contest
Ian Underhill-Cady, a senior in music at Perpich Arts High School, is one of six winners nationally of the American Composers Forum inaugural NextNotes High School Composition Awards.
NextNotes is a new national program designed to nurture the next generation of creative voices in music composition regardless of musical style. The award includes mentorships, scholarship funds and a performance of their work by professional musicians.
Ian could argue that his music is already being performed by a professional musician—himself. Last spring he released his first LP as Underhill, “Metanoia.” He is co-founder of the artist collective Desoplex, which consists of 14 members, all in high school, that range in focus including composition, media arts, visual arts, art direction and more. Most are currently students at Perpich Arts High School. Desoplex has released three LPs, including Underhill’s.
The press release about his award from the American Composers Forum says that Ian “uses lyricism and compositional symbolism to explore the substance of what it is to be human. His music stands as open territory between that which is him and that which is not, providing the listener a chance to understand the composer, if only for a moment. More than anything, his music is a form of communication and serves as his most intimate form of personal connection.”
Other winners of the award are from Pennsylvania, Florida, California, Illinois and Texas. All will be traveling to St. Paul, Minn,, in June for mentorship with leading professional composers Joshua Clausen, Joe Horton and Libby Larson. Clausen teaches music at Perpich Arts High School. The NextNotes Showcase will be at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 27, in the Mairs Concert Hall, Macalester College, St. Paul. It is free and open to the public.
