Perpich student celebrates Gold Key in New York City
Halley Boesen of Robbinsdale, who will be a senior in visual arts this fall at Perpich Arts High School, traveled to New York City June 11 to receive a national Gold Key and American Visions Award for her entry in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
As one of the winners of the national 2015 Scholastic Awards, the country's longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for students in grades 7–12, Halley was honored at an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall with special guests Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of the Clinton Foundation; Emmy and Tony-nominated actor and star of Fox’s “Glee,” Matthew Morrison; Jennifer McAllister, YouTube star (JennXPenn); and Donald Lipski, award-winning sculptor and an alumnus of the Awards.
Halley was one of only four students in Minnesota to win a national Gold Key and the only Minnesota student to receive the American Visions Award, which comes with a scholarship opportunity.
Halley’s mother, Stephanie Boesen, reported that “hearing the artists talk about their lives before and after they won the Scholastic Award was very moving. They all made the kids feel important and were so encouraging about their talent and future.”
As part of the trip, Halley had the opportunity to take an art class at the Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery where her winning piece is on exhibition. She and her mom also did a lot of sight-seeing, including the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and the Ground Zero/9-11 Memorial and Museum.
Seeing her artwork on display “made (Halley) so proud,” her mom said. “It made me teary-eyed. It was wonderful to see all the other students’ artwork, also. The talent is amazing. Our entire family is elated that she got this incredible opportunity!”
