Student and faculty news for February 2016

More Scholastic Awards, a solo exhibition in downtown Minneapolis and the French exchange students are coming! Nous sommes ravi!

Visual arts instructor Pat Benincasa is currently the featured artist in the Mayo Clinic Square gallery space in downtown Minneapolis with a wonderful collection of her work filling the space. The show is part of the Hennepin Theater Trust's Made Here series. You can watch a video of Pat, as part of the Made Here exhibition, discussing her work. See Pat's artist website.
Not only were Perpich students a dominant force in the visual and media awards of the Minnesota Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards, the writing awards have been announced and Perpich literary arts students also made a great showing! Gold Key winners are Nina Afremov and Sophie Peterson; Silver Key winners are Nina, Sophie, Omena Giles, Nadija Hunt, Ashley McGowen, Skylar Ulju and Cole Velders; and honorable mention recipients are Nina, Alyssa Pecholt and Graciella Saucedo. Congrats to each of you! Awesome showing!
Linnea (Leo) Groscost and Ashley Page, seniors in visual arts, have been selected for the Highpoint Center for Printmaking’s teen mentorship program, Access/Print. Only five students are chosen each semester. Congrats to Leo and Ashley!
Media arts students recently visited Mia to hear Dennis Michael Jon, associate curator, give an introduction to the International Modernism exhibition, discuss the process of curating the exhibition and offer some behind the scenes information on what a curator does and how the museum acquires work. They viewed the International Modernism exhibition as well as “100+: A Photograph for Every Year of the MIA.”
Last week a friend of media instructor Rebecca Bullen, Wilson Webb, visited the class. Webb is an on-set photographer and recipient of the 2015 ICG Excellence in Unit Still Photography for Motion Pictures. The Coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson and Ben Stiller are just a few of the many great directors, cinematographers and actors Webb has worked with. He shared some of his photographs from Inherent Vice, A Serious Man, Zoolander 2 and many more as he discussed his journey and knowledge gained in achieving his current position. You can see his work here
Madame Trina Keller, French instructor, has announced that for the fifth consecutive year, Perpich will be welcoming students from Viry Chatillon, France, for a three-week visit.  Mariane Segala and Gavin Dassieu arrive on Friday evening, Feb. 12.  Mariane will be hosted by Sjournee Cornelius-Quaidoo, a senior in dance, and Gavin will be hosted by Samantha Bryant, a junior in literature. Gavin's older brother Clement was an exchange student here at Perpich two years ago. Let’s all be sure to say “Bienvenue!” to our visitors.
