Participants will watch three\, 50-minute classes – one section each of grades 5\, 2\, and 3. Note that instruction in the music classroom is lead in English\, though some Spanish language will be used. \nFollowing the class instruction\, we will move off-site to get lunch and discuss elements of the instruction that might be applicable in your classroom. Lunch is pay on your own. \nHost teacher David Davis shares: From kindergarteners co-teaching songs from their own cultures to 4th and 5th graders composing original music to honor a community member on an instrument of their choosing\, creativity and student voice are at the heart of my self-design curriculum. My goal is to send the clear message that everyone is a musician regardless of technical skill or musical background. As a Science of Reading (LETRS)-trained educator\, I also integrate rhythmic and tonal literacy through sound-before-sight strategies\, supporting aspects of music literacy\, including speaking (improvising)\, reading\, writing (composing)\, and understanding (audiating) music. In the 8th grade class you will see Molly introduce the 9 (a way to categorize art developed by Ian Sands). These categories help students to make choices about the art they want to make in a Choice Based Classroom. Students will also be using a planning document to plan their first themed project. In the 7th grade class students will be learning about the critical response protocol and decoding a work of art.
