The spring concert is the culmination of a semester of work emphasizing dance history\, dance composition\, creativity\, and inspiration. While learning different movement styles\, the dancers were introduced to various artists of the past. As they studied Bill T. Jones\, they considered his quote to “ask himself urgent questions”. The dancers incorporated this idea of urgent question as they created solos\, duets\, and trios. As the students studied other legacy dance styles\, these influences seeped their way into movement\, structure\, and inspiration. DESCRIPTION:In January – March 2026\, Perpich Center for Arts Education is hosting our 5th annual series of virtual sessions on topics required for renewal of Tier 3 and Tier 4 licenses in Minnesota. This year’s series addresses SIX of the required topics and each topic is offered twice. Examples of the strategies shared will come from arts classrooms but all educators are welcome! \nCREATING A MORE INCLUSIVE ARTS CLASSROOM\nWe will explore best practices for teaching English Learners in your arts classroom and then expand our collective thinking to include accommodations to meet the needs of all students. Thank you! \nABOUT THE SUMMIT: Join us for a day-long exploration of rhythm and legacy\, exploring deeper connections\, highlighting teaching practice\, and sharing how our embodiment influences our teaching. We will start the day with a Pilates session with guest teacher Ingrid Ciaccia to help us warm up. Guest teachers Davente Gilreath and Matthew Wagner return to ground us in physical practice that highlights coordination\, rhythm\, and line. We will delve deeply into styles and genres – modern Afro-Caribbean (Davente) and tap groove (Matthew). As we dance we will question and reframe history\, both ours as teachers and the history of the form. His dance training began at Perpich Center for Arts Education where he was exposed to styles of dance including modern\, ballet\, jazz\, african\, and contact improvisation. Gilreath furthered his dance training at the University of Minnesota where he worked with professors such as Ananya Chatterjea\, Erin Thompson\, and Toni Pierce‐Sands. During this time he was also able to perform and create work with Minnesota‐based companies such as Threads Dance Project and Contempo Physical Dance (with Marciano Silva dos Santos). Gilreath Joined Garth Fagan Dance in 2014 and during his 8 years with the company performed numerous key works from the Fagan cannon around the country including new works choreographed by PJ Pennewell the company director. He was promoted to senior company member and appointed the Director of the Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble. He also taught Intermediate/Advanced Fagan Technique for the Garth Fagan Dance School and for the Garth Fagan Summer Movement Institute. Gilreath is now a dance instructor at The University of Minnesota where he teaches Contemporary\, African Diasporic Movement and Jazz. In the last 3 years since returning to Minneapolis he has danced for choreographers Joe Chvala\, Darrius Strong\, and has just joined Ananya Dance Theatre. He has set choreography for senior students at TU Dance\, Perpich Center for Arts Education (2023) and in his own solo work “Rumination” (which premiered in Choreographers’ Evening\, Walker Art Center\, Nov 2024). \nMATTHEW WAGNER BIO\nMatthew Is an Assistant Professor of Dance and Musical Theater at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research is focused in dances of the African Diaspora like tap and jazz\, and numerous other percussive and improvisational dance forms. Professionally\, his work has been seen at the 92nd St. Y\, St. Marks\, Theater by the Sea\, TexArts\, UMD\, Perpich Center for Arts Education\, Renegade Theater Company\, Nor-Shor Theater\, and with his former Tap company Step Brothers NYC. Matthew likes to incorporate a sense of play and exploration into his work\, encouraging students to be bold in their choices. Teachers like Mary Harding\, Suyenne Simoes\, Susan Hebach\, Roxane Butterfly and Sharon Levi have had an immense impact on his practice. \nINGRID CIACCIA BIO\nIngrid is a dance educator and certified Yoga and Pilates instructor. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and German Cultural Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. \n\nDriven by a passion for exploring the relationship between body\, mind\, and movement\, Ingrid’s work blends artistry with technical precision. As Studio Manager and Instructor at St. Paul Pilates and Fitness\, she guides clients through breath-synchronized exercises that build strength\, flexibility\, and stamina while nurturing body awareness and emotional well-being. In her role as a dance educator\, she inspires students to cultivate responsibility\, creativity\, and confidence both on and off the stage. \nIngrid has directed dance programs at Rye Country Day School and Culver Academies\, where she was honored with the Delmar T. Spivey Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2022. Her teaching philosophy bridges the classroom and the Pilates studio\, encouraging creative exploration and interdisciplinary collaboration.

DESCRIPTION:In January – March 2026\, Perpich Center for Arts Education is hosting our 5th annual series of virtual sessions on topics required for renewal of Tier 3 and Tier 4 licenses in Minnesota. This year’s series addresses SIX of the required topics and each topic is offered twice. Examples of the strategies shared will come from arts classrooms but all educators are welcome! \nLEARNING FROM OJIBWE AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS\nIn video interviews\, four Ojibwe authors/illustrators share their work and provide a window into their culture and history: Thomas Peacock (Fond du Lac)\, Marcie Rendon (White Earth)\, Jonathan Thunder (Red Lake)\, and Anton Treuer (Leech Lake). Allison Waukau (Menominee/Navajo) also offers insights for selecting Native literature to bring into your teaching. DESCRIPTION:“THE INTENTION OF TEACHER-TO-TEACHER OBSERVATION IS THAT IT BE A TOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND\, IN TURN\, FOR STUDENT LEARNING.” \nREGISTRATION HERE \nDATE AND TIME:\nMonday\, November 10\, 2025 (8:45 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) \n\n8:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. – Check in at the Main Office and meet up with the group (please bring photo ID)\n9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. – Participants will first observe a lesson team taught by Maddie Olson and Molly Olson with the 7th grade Media Literacy class. Students will be working in groups and creating a dance combination through the process of using an algorithm with icons to represent the dance. They will be incorporating the idea of function and iteration (CS/math terms). Groups will practice and film their combinations.\n10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Mary Harding will present a lesson to participants on using stories and dance to support literacy goals in the classroom. She will also teach a lesson centered on PE dance standards.\n11:30 a.m. – 11:40 a.m. – Sharing from Mary and Molly from the NDEO Conference about ideas that can be used in any classroom.\n11:40 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – **Spanish class dance break – the Spanish class will come in to show their favorite dance that helps them learn vocabulary.**\n11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Participants will prepare a lesson which incorporates dance to implement into their own classroom with support from Mary and Molly.\n12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Facilitated conversation and lunch with a debriefing session (lunch is pay on your own. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! Participants are strongly encouraged to attend as a team: arts educator + non-arts/classroom educator(s). \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Gaia Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nOnce you arrive to campus\, follow the road around to the left and past the soccer field. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2025 Minnesota Dance Summer Workshop hosted by Perpich Center for Arts Education! \nRHYTHM AND LEGACY\nPresenters – Davente Gilreath (Dance 2010)\, Matthew Wagner (Dance 1999)\, Mary Harding \nDATE AND TIME: \nThursday\, August 14\, 2025\n8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. \nRegistration Due by August 4\, 2025. \nAbout the Summer Workshop: Join us for a day-long exploration of rhythm and legacy. Guest teachers Davente Gilreath and Matthew Wagner will ground us in physical practice that highlights coordination\, rhythm\, and line. We will delve deeply into styles and genres – modern Afro-Caribbean (Davente) and tap groove (Matthew). As we dance\, we will question and reframe history\, both ours as teachers and the history of the form. \nWe will dance\, we will discuss\, and we will thread our work with the naming of our legacies as movers as we introduce our students to a more inclusive history. \nLearning Outcomes: Participants will learn movements based on techniques\, styles\, and genres of guest artists. Participants will reflect on their personal dance histories and how it influences their teaching.\nParticipants will layer elements to increase complexity in curriculum. \nREGISTRATION HERE \nREGISTRATION FEE: Free \nLUNCH:\nLunch will be provided.
