DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2026 Minnesota Dance Summit hosted by Perpich Center for Arts Education! \nREGISTRATION LINK \nRHYTHM AND LEGACY 2.0\nPresented by: Davente Gilreath\, Matthew Wagner\, Ingrid Ciaccia\, and Mary Harding \nDATE AND TIME: \nSaturday\, February 21st from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. \n\n*Please note that we will provide participants with lunch. We ask that you list your dietary restrictions in the registration form. Thank you! \nABOUT THE SUMMIT: Join us for a day-long exploration of rhythm and legacy\, exploring deeper connections\, highlighting teaching practice\, and sharing how our embodiment influences our teaching. We will start the day with a Pilates session with guest teacher Ingrid Ciaccia to help us warm up. Guest teachers Davente Gilreath and Matthew Wagner return to ground us in physical practice that highlights coordination\, rhythm\, and line. We will delve deeply into styles and genres – modern Afro-Caribbean (Davente) and tap groove (Matthew). As we dance we will question and reframe history\, both ours as teachers and the history of the form. We will reflect continually on the teaching practice of the day and identify components that we want to use moving forward and what we might leave behind. \nLEARNING GOALS: \n\nBy the end of the this workshop: \n\n\nParticipants will learn movements based on techniques\, styles and genres of guest artists.\nParticipants will reflect on their personal dance histories and how it influences their teaching.\nParticipants will layer elements to increase complexity in curriculum.\n\nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Dance Studio\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\, Golden Valley\, MN  55422 \nREGISTRATION FEE: FREE \nCLOCK HOURS\nYou will receive 6 Professional Development clock hours for attending the entire Summit. Email mary.harding@pcae.k12.mn.us \n\n  \nDAVENTE GILREATH BIO\nDavente was born and raised in Minneapolis. His dance training began at Perpich Center for Arts Education where he was exposed to styles of dance including modern\, ballet\, jazz\, african\, and contact improvisation. Gilreath furthered his dance training at the University of Minnesota where he worked with professors such as Ananya Chatterjea\, Erin Thompson\, and Toni Pierce‐Sands. During this time he was also able to perform and create work with Minnesota‐based companies such as Threads Dance Project and Contempo Physical Dance (with Marciano Silva dos Santos). Gilreath Joined Garth Fagan Dance in 2014 and during his 8 years with the company performed numerous key works from the Fagan cannon around the country including new works choreographed by PJ Pennewell the company director. He was promoted to senior company member and appointed the Director of the Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble. He also taught Intermediate/Advanced Fagan Technique for the Garth Fagan Dance School and for the Garth Fagan Summer Movement Institute. Gilreath is now a dance instructor at The University of Minnesota where he teaches Contemporary\, African Diasporic Movement and Jazz. In the last 3 years since returning to Minneapolis he has danced for choreographers Joe Chvala\, Darrius Strong\, and has just joined Ananya Dance Theatre. He has set choreography for senior students at TU Dance\, Perpich Center for Arts Education (2023) and in his own solo work “Rumination” (which premiered in Choreographers’ Evening\, Walker Art Center\, Nov 2024). \nMATTHEW WAGNER BIO\nMatthew Is an Assistant Professor of Dance and Musical Theater at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research is focused in dances of the African Diaspora like tap and jazz\, and numerous other percussive and improvisational dance forms. Professionally\, his work has been seen at the 92nd St. Y\, St. Marks\, Theater by the Sea\, TexArts\, UMD\, Perpich Center for Arts Education\, Renegade Theater Company\, Nor-Shor Theater\, and with his former Tap company Step Brothers NYC. Matthew likes to incorporate a sense of play and exploration into his work\, encouraging students to be bold in their choices. Teachers like Mary Harding\, Suyenne Simoes\, Susan Hebach\, Roxane Butterfly and Sharon Levi have had an immense impact on his practice. \nINGRID CIACCIA BIO\nIngrid is a dance educator and certified Yoga and Pilates instructor. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and German Cultural Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. \n\nDriven by a passion for exploring the relationship between body\, mind\, and movement\, Ingrid’s work blends artistry with technical precision. As Studio Manager and Instructor at St. Paul Pilates and Fitness\, she guides clients through breath-synchronized exercises that build strength\, flexibility\, and stamina while nurturing body awareness and emotional well-being. In her role as a dance educator\, she inspires students to cultivate responsibility\, creativity\, and confidence both on and off the stage. \nIngrid has directed dance programs at Rye Country Day School and Culver Academies\, where she was honored with the Delmar T. Spivey Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2022. Her teaching philosophy bridges the classroom and the Pilates studio\, encouraging creative exploration and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Students will be working in groups and creating a dance combination through the process of using an algorithm with icons to represent the dance. They will be incorporating the idea of function and iteration (CS/math terms). Groups will practice and film their combinations.\n10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Mary Harding will present a lesson to participants on using stories and dance to support literacy goals in the classroom. DESCRIPTION:Perpich Center for Arts Education would like to invite you to a meeting about dance and theater teacher licensing. Perpich Center\, MDE\, and PELSB are preparing for future rulemaking regarding the teaching licensure standards in the arts—dance\, media arts\, music\, theater\, and visual arts. Reviewing these requirements for adequate reflection of the evolving needs of K-12 students\, schools\, and communities is an important undertaking. This process presents a great opportunity for input from the field\, and the results of this process will have an impact on the future of arts education in our state. Moving forward\, your input and involvement are crucial to ensure a successful outcome. \nThere are two info sessions available for dance and theater: \n\nTuesday\, September 23 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\, or\nWednesday\, October 1 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION HERE \n\nOther Details: \n\nWhat: We will share the steering committee recommendations and opportunities for participation and feedback. We will explain the steps taken so far and outline the next courses of action. There will also be time for asking clarifying questions. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! We will also explore multiple variations for movement prompts. \nOn Tuesday\, July 29 will explore a new iteration of a Name Dance\, a session called “We Come from Stardust – Story\, Self\, and Dance.” How many times have you taught a “Name Dance” to your students? How has it changed over time? My “Name Dance” has shifted\, depending on purpose and intention. This session demonstrates my most recent iteration with my high school students. \nUsing the children’s book\, “Where We Come From”\, written by four Minnesota authors\, including Diane Wilson\, we will explore creating dances based on self\, place\, family\, and memory. This children’s book proposes that “We come from stardust. The Gaia Building is the 2-story white building back by the woods. Enter through the doors at the top of the parking lot. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to participate in these work days.\nLunch is provided.\nEach person must complete the registration and with that\, participants are strongly encouraged to attend as a team: arts educator + non-arts/classroom educator(s).\nA clock hours form for 6 hours will be provided following each day.\nThe facilitator for these work days is Wendy Barden\, Director of the Professional Development and Resource Programs at Perpich Center.

DESCRIPTION:TICKET RESERVATION LINK \nUnbeknown Paths\n \nFrom all corners of the state\, the dancers of the Perpich Arts High School Dance Program are happy to present “Unbeknown Paths” on May 1 and 2\, 2025. The spring concert is the culmination of a semester of work. The dancers will demonstrate their creativity\, choreographic skills\, and performance expertise in student choreographed works\, faculty work\, and guest artist work. These dancers followed a path that somehow brought them together in the dance program at Perpich. While here\, they have leaned on\, learned from\, and grown with each other. Now\, the paths will diverge again into distinct\, beautiful paths. The works range in style\, musical choice\, and intention\, revealing the dancers’ individual accomplishments and their strong feeling of ensemble. The title\, ”Unbeknown Paths”\, refers to the feeling the students have about moving on different paths at the end of the year. The dances range from dynamic to fluid\, from formal to fun\, with a range of intensities. Congratulations to all involved with the show! \nUnbeknown Paths \nChoreography by the Perpich Arts High School dance students and guest artist: Davente Gilreath (Dance 2010) \n\nSix dancers from six Minnesota communities\nSixteen student choreographed dances\nOne guest artist\nA million ideas of inspiration\nOne community\nTwo priceless evenings\n\nDancers:\nMia Botz – Minneapolis\nSam Ek – Thief River Falls\nElla Gorter – Pipestone\nAna Kol-Balfour – Minneapolis\nAlma Soave – Minneapolis\nDani Wyborny – Big Lake \nDance Instructor – Mary Harding\nLighting Designer & Sound Board Operator – Ellie Simonett\nGuest Choreographer – Davente Gilreath \nThe Road Not Taken\nBy Robert Frost \nTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood\,\nAnd sorry I could not travel both\nAnd be one traveler\, long I stood\nAnd looked down one as far as I could\nTo where it bent in the undergrowth; \nThen took the other\, as just as fair\,\nAnd having perhaps the better claim\,\nBecause it was grassy and wanted wear;\nThough as for that the passing there\nHad worn them really about the same\, \nAnd both that morning equally lay\nIn leaves no step had trodden black.\nOh\, I kept the first for another day!\nYet knowing how way leads on to way\,\nI doubted if I should ever come back. \nI shall be telling this with a sigh\nSomewhere ages and ages hence:\nTwo roads diverged in a wood\, and I—\nI took the one less traveled by\,\nAnd that has made all the difference.
