DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Harding\, Dance Education Specialist\, on Tuesdays in July as we are introduced to ViewPoints and movement prompts based on children’s literature! \nOn Tuesday\, July 22 we will emphasize ViewPoints\, a movement-based practice that uses six elements – space\, shape\, time\, emotion\, movement\, and story – to create and analyze performance\, focusing on the materiality of the body and the creative use of space. We will also explore multiple variations for movement prompts. \nOn Tuesday\, July 29 will explore a new iteration of a Name Dance\, a session called “We Come from Stardust – Story\, Self\, and Dance.” How many times have you taught a “Name Dance” to your students? How has it changed over time? My “Name Dance” has shifted\, depending on purpose and intention. This session demonstrates my most recent iteration with my high school students. \nUsing the children’s book\, “Where We Come From”\, written by four Minnesota authors\, including Diane Wilson\, we will explore creating dances based on self\, place\, family\, and memory. This children’s book proposes that “We come from stardust. We come from place\, language\, and spirit.” The session explores the creative process for this curriculum\, including writing and movement prompts based on the book and strategies for reflection and revision. \nWe will engage in reflective discussions on the shifts in our practice. This session will give us a chance to walk through one teacher’s experience and take the age old “Name Dance” into our current world. \nThe sessions will be tailored to the needs of the participants. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! DESCRIPTION:TICKET RESERVATION LINK \nUnbeknown Paths\n \nFrom all corners of the state\, the dancers of the Perpich Arts High School Dance Program are happy to present “Unbeknown Paths” on May 1 and 2\, 2025. The spring concert is the culmination of a semester of work. The dancers will demonstrate their creativity\, choreographic skills\, and performance expertise in student choreographed works\, faculty work\, and guest artist work. These dancers followed a path that somehow brought them together in the dance program at Perpich. While here\, they have leaned on\, learned from\, and grown with each other. Now\, the paths will diverge again into distinct\, beautiful paths. The works range in style\, musical choice\, and intention\, revealing the dancers’ individual accomplishments and their strong feeling of ensemble. The title\, ”Unbeknown Paths”\, refers to the feeling the students have about moving on different paths at the end of the year. The dances range from dynamic to fluid\, from formal to fun\, with a range of intensities. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, February 4\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 p.m.) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, February 4\, our guest is Sam Zimmerman\, a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Sam is in a unique position to connect his art and K-12 education\, having worked more than 20 years as a special education teacher and school administrator. \nSam’s art continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling with themes of environmental stewardship and conservation. His first book\, Following My Spirit Home\, is a collection of paintings and stories from his first year back in Minnesota after living on the East Coast. His artwork is held in private collections in the United States and abroad and in public installations in the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center\, Voyageur National Park\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, and the communities of Duluth and Grand Marais. Sam has received grant awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council\, Northland Foundation Maada’ookiing\, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation. \nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a copy of How the Birds Got their Songs (2024) by Travis Zimmerman\, illustrated by Sam Zimmerman. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.\nShortly after February 4\, a video recording of the interview will be posted on the Perpich Center’s Native Authors & Artists webpage.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2025 Minnesota Dance Summit hosted by Perpich Center for Arts Education! \nREGISTRATION LINK\nRegistration Due by January 20\, 2025 \nBig Ideas through Big Art\nFacilitated by Cleo Mack \nDATE AND TIME: \nSaturday\, February 1st from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \n\n*Please note that we will provide participants with lunch. We ask that you list your dietary restrictions in the registration form. Thank you! \nABOUT THE SUMMIT: How do we encourage young dancers to engage in intellectual and artistic pursuit? How do you access students’ unique creative voices? How do you build students’ confidence as learners? How do we encourage artistic ambition? How do we create spaces that value the contributions of each and every student? \nThis workshop offers a clear approach for exploring complex concepts through art by creating large scale work on students in both the private and K-12 sectors of education through a student centered and cross-curricular perspective. Shifting our perspective to creating large scale work allows for more investigative time for complicated subject matter\, idea formation\, creative process\, and technical mastery. Through a student centered model\, our students are the innovators of concept\, choreography\, and progression of the presentation/performance. This format enables the learner to tackle big concepts through the vehicle of art. Approaching dance performances with a cross-curricular mindset allows students to research historical perspectives\, scientific phenomena\, literature and current societal paradigms through mind and body learning which\, in turn\, develops a deeper understanding of the topic. \nParticipants will explore different examples of these curriculum ideas\, learn a format for big ideas/big art\, explore and conceive their own curriculum idea that works in their setting\, learn culturally responsive strategies that value each student\, see the strengths of this form for both student buy in and advocacy for dance and cross curricular collaborations. \nLEARNING GOALS: \n\nBy the end of the this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\n\nArticulate multiple ideas\, definitions and purposes of “Big Idea” work.\nDevelop methods to allow students to be integral in the development of the concept from the infancy of the project\, to create the movement language\, develop characters\, and help organize the overarching structure of the work.\nEstablish/map out at least one Big Idea to take to the students\, fellow teachers and administration to support student agency\, student buy in and advocacy for your program.\n\nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Dance Studio\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\, Golden Valley\, MN  55422 \nREGISTRATION FEE: FREE \nCLOCK HOURS\nYou will receive 6 Professional Development clock hours for attending the entire Summit. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Wilson College and a BFA in Dance from Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University. Her work has been described as “a collision of quirky sophistication and unmeasured recklessness.” She has been commissioned by the Outlet Dance Project at Grounds for Sculpture\, 10 Hairy Legs\, DeSales University\, and Quad City Ballet. Ms. Mack has been honored to receive two Individual Artists Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts\, in recognition of her high artistic merit. Ms. Mack has been selected by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to Watch.” She has enjoyed support from the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission\, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and has also received space grants from The Field\, DTW\, and Lincoln Center. \nMs. Mack’s performance work has been presented at Joyce Soho\, Dance Theater Workshop’s Fresh Tracks\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.\, WAX\, P.S. 1 Moma\, the Hungarian American Dance Festival in Hungary\, and at NJPAC as part of Jersey Moves. 2016 marks the inception of Mack’s newest project\, Rock Dance Collective (RDC) is focused on creating interdisciplinary work in traditional and non-traditional environments. Ms. Mack’s sculptural work was on view as part of the NJ Arts Annual “Dissonance” at the Morris Museum and the Olympia Project. She has served on the boards of DanceNJ\, CoLAB Arts\, and the Montclair Dance Festival. \nMs. Mack is the Director of Dance at the Middlesex County Magnet Schools and co-owner of Washington Rock Dance. She has been a lecturer at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts and a teaching artist for the American Repertory Ballet Institute\, DeSales University\, Muhlenberg University and the University of Iowa. Ms. Mack has served on the writing team of the 2020 New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Standards and as well as the New Jersey ELA Standards Review Committee in 2015. She has been selected to present her educational philosophies at the National Dance Education Organization National Conferences in Arizona\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Florida. She was honored to be the recipient of the 2017 Hollins University Teaching Award.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\n\n\nGrant Writing 101 for Educators in the Arts \n\n\nDESCRIPTION: Looking for $$ to support your arts projects and programs? Grants can be an excellent source of revenue\, but where do you find them? How do you write them? And what else do you need to know to make this stream of funding worthwhile? In this workshop\, we’ll cover the basic who\, what\, where\, when\, why\, and how of grant writing. We’ll also identify key sources and tools for finding more\, as well as breaking down the specific and unique writing style required for grants. Participants will have plenty of time for questions! Whether it is your first time researching\, writing\, submitting\, and managing a grant\, or you just need a refresher\, join us and sharpen your grant writing skills and savvy. \nPRESENTER: The presenter for this session is Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Ph.D.\, Perpich’s Theater Education Specialist\, and a theater educator\, artist\, administrator\, and scholar with over 20 years of experience working with students and artists of all ages. She has served as a grant writer and grant program supervisor for CLIMB Theatre\, Theater Mu\, Mixed Blood Theatre\, Oakland Theater Project\, Sod House Theater\, Full Circle Theater\, and her own projects. \nINTENDED PARTICIPANTS: This workshop is intended K-12 educators working in the Arts. \nDATE AND TIME: This is a virtual session that will take place on Wednesday\, October 23 (4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.). Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with a special guest\, provides resource lists\, and offers time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. Watch our website for resources and a video recording of each interview. \nOn Tuesday\, October 8\, we are pleased to welcome Thomas Peacock and Betsy Albert-Peacock to Perpich Center! \nThomas Peacock (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe) has authored or co-authored many fiction books and books on Ojibwe history and culture\, education\, and racism. Betsy Albert-Peacock (Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe) was a faculty member in the Education Department of the University of Minnesota Duluth and has authored numerous children’s books.
