DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, April 15\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 pm) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, April 15\, our guest is Teresa Peterson\, Utuhu Cistinna Win\, Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota and member of the Upper Sioux Community. For her writing\, she has received awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. Teresa’s true passion is digging in her garden that overlooks the Mni Sota River valley and feeding friends and family. \nRecent Books by Teresa Peterson: \n\nPerennial Ceremony: Lessons and Gifts from a Dakota Garden (2024) – prose\, poetry\, and recipes guiding us through the Dakota seasons and lessons from Teresa’s life as a gardener\, gatherer\, and lover of the land\nVoices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers (2022)\, written with her uncle\, Walter “Super” LaBatte Jr. – stories shared through five generations of their family; selected by the Native American One Read by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Understand Native Minnesota campaign\nGrasshopper Girl (2022) – this story includes a Dakota tale of Uŋktomi (spider)\, one of the trickster stories Teresa’s mother heard growing up; highly recommended by American Indians in Children’s Literature (AICL) and featured as one of Nick Jr.’s children’s books to celebrate Native American Heritage Month\n\nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a free book. \nWe look forward to talking with Teresa Peterson about her work and how K-12 educators can bring the experiences she writes about into their classrooms! \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.
