DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HERE \nPerpich is excited to offer a series of four (4) summer Professional Development sessions for music teachers\, in-person\, at Perpich Center for Arts Education in August\, 2024. Each session will meet the needs of a variety of learners and cover a variety of topics. Come to one or all four! Separate registration is required for each workshop. \nMusic Literacy for the 21st Century with Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer \nDATE: Wednesday\, August 7\, 2024 \nTIME: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\, plus optional off-campus lunch \nLOCATION (in-person):\nPerpich Center for Arts Education\nGaia Building – Glass Box\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\, Golden Valley\, MN 55422\n*Gaia is the white building label 6105 on the east side of Perpich campus by the soccer fields \nDESCRIPTION: Our music standards suggest that literacy is constructed through three strands: Create\, Perform\, and Respond. However\, the way musicians create\, perform\, and respond is in constant flux with society. This means our literacy methods must also be in constant flux. This workshop will examine how changes in the production and transmission of music has changed in the 21st century and how our pedagogy might respond to these changes. Instruments like the ukulele\, recorder\, melodica\, and DAW will be used to explore the authentic practices and texts common to forms of electronically integrated music practices while keeping literacy at the core. \nTopics: \n\nMusical text: What musical texts are today’s musicians reading and how does that influence our idea of literacy?\nEncoding vs. decoding: How do various input stimuli—sounds and symbols—direct understanding?\nIconic representation: How does the symbol system offered through the digital audio workstation create a new bridge to literacy?\nPedagogy for digital music literacies: What instruments\, processes\, and products prepare students to be content creators and collaborators in the digital media landscape?\n\nMaterials: This workshop will be very hands-on. We will play recorder\, mallets\, drums\, melodica\, ukulele\, and the computer as we explore concepts through popular music. Participants are not required to bring all of these instruments. However\, as a minimum\, having a recorder and ukulele will be helpful. \nTarget Audience: This workshop is primarily for general music teachers of grades 3-8. However\, the ideas and methods have direct application to any K-12 music classroom. \nABOUT DR. AARON LOHMEYER: Our workshop leader is Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer. Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Jazz Band Director at Winona State University. He received his B.A. in Religion from Davidson College\, M.M. in Saxophone Performance from Florida State University\, and both his M.Ed and Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. His doctoral work focused on diverse musical literacies and creative practices. His other professional training includes Orff Schulwerk Level I in Kenai\, AK\, and Levels II and III from the University of Kentucky. \nDr. Lohmeyer has developed his pedagogy and research interests through public school teaching experiences in classroom general music\, beginning band\, world drumming\, class guitar\, jazz band\, adaptive music\, and creative composition. He also maintains an active performance schedule in jazz\, classical\, and popular music styles. Dr. Lohmeyer’s publications can be seen in Psychology of Music\, Action\, Criticism\, and Theory for Music Education\, The Orff Echo\, General Music Today\, String Notes\, and The Florida Music Director. He has presented at both the state and national levels on Orff-Schulwerk\, jazz pedagogy\, Popular Music Pedagogy (PMP)\, electronic music composition\, and music in special education. Dr. Lohmeyer’s current research and practice examines diverse musical literacies for the digitally connected world. \nDETAILS: \n\nParticipants are eligible to receive 5 clock hours for attending the workshop. Participants will earn 4 clock-hours for attending the workshop\, and one clock our for attending lunch (pay on your own).\nWater and snacks will be provided.\nPlease bring a recorder and ukulele to the workshop\, if you can.\n\nQuestions?
