Perpich is also on a bus route.\nEnter through the main doors and proceed down the stairs to check in. \nDESCRIPTION:\nThe Perpich Center is thrilled to present a Lecture/Demonstration by the groundbreaking Spiderwoman Theater – the longest-running Native American theater company in the country – on Tuesday\, March 5th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please join us to learn about Spiderwoman’s unique methodology of theater-making. “Storyweaving” describes the layering of stories\, images\, sound\, movement\, and music\, creating a three dimensional tapestry which is embodied in space and becomes the theater production. \nFor more information about the company\, visit their website at: https://www.spiderwomantheater.org/ \nWHO:\nPresenters: Founding Member and Artistic Director Muriel Miguel (Kuna/Rappahannock) and other members of Spiderwoman Theater\, as well as cast/creative team members from their touring production of Misdemeanor Dream. \nParticipants: This lecture/demonstration is geared for both students and educators\, specifically K-12/College/University Theater and Arts Students\, Educators\, and Directors. This regular series takes place at Perpich Center for Arts Education. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with a special guest\, provides resource lists\, and offers time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. Can’t make it to Perpich Center for the “live” event? Watch our website for resources and a video recording of each interview. \nOn Tuesday\, March 5\, we are excited to welcome Jonathan Thunder as our guest! \nJonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe) is the illustrator of the award-recognized Bowwow Powwow by Brenda J. Child (Red Lake Ojibwe). We look forward to talking with Jonathan about his work as an illustrator\, along with his work as an artist using a wide range of mediums. He is known for his surreal paintings\, digitally animated films\, and installations in which he addresses subject matter of personal experience and social commentary. \nJonathan attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe\, NM and studied Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in Minneapolis\, MN at the Art Institute International. His work has been featured in many state\, regional\, and national exhibitions\, and is in the permanent collections of museums and universities. Thunder is the recipient of a 2020-21 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award for his risk taking in painting. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight refreshments will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.

Every teacher—experienced or new to the field—can struggle with a high pressure workplace\, multiple competing tasks\, challenging student behavior\, lack of support\, and/or contradictory leadership. In this seminar\, we will identify these parts of our job\, how it makes us feel\, and identify new ways to handle these sources of burnout. \nPRESENTER:\nAmy Kienberger has a B.S. in Dance Education and Business Education from the University of Illinois. She also earned a M.Ed. in Technology Integration from St. Catherine University and a M.Ed. in Professional Studies in Arts Education from the University of Minnesota. His father is a professor of their language\, Ojibwe\, at a local college\, so they have to be there. But Ezra hates the dirty\, polluted snow around them. He hates being away from the rez at Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation. And he hates the local bully in his neighborhood\, Matt Schroeder\, who terrorizes Ezra and his friend Nora George. \nEzra gets into a terrible fight with Matt at school defending Nora\, and that same night\, Matt’s house burns down. Instantly\, Ezra becomes a prime suspect. Knowing he won’t get a fair deal\, and knowing his innocence\, Ezra’s family sends him away to run traplines with his grandfather in a remote part of Canada\, while the investigation is ongoing. But the Schroeders are looking for him… \nThis is both a taut thriller and a raw\, tender coming-of-age story\, about one Ojibwe boy learning to love himself through the love of his family around him. Separate registration is required for each workshop. \nTeaching Guitar for All Students with Jared Waln \nDATE: Monday\, August 5\, 2024 \nTIME: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\, plus optional off-campus lunch \nLOCATION (in-person):\nPerpich Center for Arts Education\nGaia Building – Glass Box\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\, Golden Valley\, MN 55422\n*Gaia is the white building label 6105 on the east side of Perpich campus by the soccer fields \nDESCRIPTION: Learn how to create a guitar program to meet the needs of a variety of learners. We will explore reading music\, reading tablature\, playing open chords\, strumming patterns\, fingerpicking\, and flat picking in multiple genres of music. From special needs students to advanced performers\, we will discuss curriculum and pedagogy to engage students in songwriting and building guitar performance skills. Target audience: This workshop is primarily for general music teachers of grades 3-12. However\, the ideas and methods have direct application to any K-12 music classroom. \nABOUT JARED WALN: Our workshop leader is Jared Waln. Jared Waln is a 1st place competition winning guitarist\, music educator for 10+ years\, classical and jazz guitarist\, and performer located in the Twin Cities. Holding a bachelor degree in music performance classical guitar at the University of St. Thomas and a masters degree in instrumental K-12 music education also at the University of St. Thomas\, Jared teaches high school guitar education at Southwest High School\, and is an adjunct music professor at the University of St. Thomas where he directs the guitar ensemble\, pop music collective\, and teaches private guitar lessons for both majors and non-music majors. \nDETAILS: \n\nParticipants are eligible to receive 5 clock hours for attending the workshop. You will learn multi-part songs from Ghana and other African countries\, as well as drumming games to improve focus\, self-discipline\, and coordination. You will also learn how to transfer some of these activities to the instruments you have in your classroom—even if you don’t have a lot of drums. No drumming experience necessary! Target audience: This workshop is primarily for general music teachers of grades 3-8. However\, the ideas and methods have direct application to any K-12 music classroom. \nABOUT KATHY CROCKETT: Our workshop leader is Kathy Crockett. Kathy Crockett has been a music specialist at Turtle Lake Elementary (Mounds View Public Schools) for 20 years. She has her Masters of Music Education degree from University of St. Thomas\, specializing in Orff Schulwerk. While at the University of St. Thomas\, she studied African drumming from Sowah Mensah which enabled her decision to start an African Music Program at Turtle Lake in 2006. She studied\, performed and taught with Sowah for the next 16 years. Kathy and Sowah won the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award for their African Music Ensemble partnership. Kathy taught at the Women’s Drum Center in St. Paul for 3 years and has been a clinician numerous times at MMEA. Separate registration is required for each workshop. \nMusic Literacy for the 21st Century with Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer \nDATE: Wednesday\, August 7\, 2024 \nTIME: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\, plus optional off-campus lunch \nLOCATION (in-person):\nPerpich Center for Arts Education\nGaia Building – Glass Box\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\, Golden Valley\, MN 55422\n*Gaia is the white building label 6105 on the east side of Perpich campus by the soccer fields \nDESCRIPTION: Our music standards suggest that literacy is constructed through three strands: Create\, Perform\, and Respond. However\, the way musicians create\, perform\, and respond is in constant flux with society. This means our literacy methods must also be in constant flux. This workshop will examine how changes in the production and transmission of music has changed in the 21st century and how our pedagogy might respond to these changes. Instruments like the ukulele\, recorder\, melodica\, and DAW will be used to explore the authentic practices and texts common to forms of electronically integrated music practices while keeping literacy at the core. \nTopics: \n\nMusical text: What musical texts are today’s musicians reading and how does that influence our idea of literacy?\nEncoding vs. decoding: How do various input stimuli—sounds and symbols—direct understanding?\nIconic representation: How does the symbol system offered through the digital audio workstation create a new bridge to literacy?\nPedagogy for digital music literacies: What instruments\, processes\, and products prepare students to be content creators and collaborators in the digital media landscape?\n\nMaterials: This workshop will be very hands-on. We will play recorder\, mallets\, drums\, melodica\, ukulele\, and the computer as we explore concepts through popular music. Participants are not required to bring all of these instruments. However\, as a minimum\, having a recorder and ukulele will be helpful. \nTarget Audience: This workshop is primarily for general music teachers of grades 3-8. However\, the ideas and methods have direct application to any K-12 music classroom. \nABOUT DR. AARON LOHMEYER: Our workshop leader is Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer. Dr. Aaron Lohmeyer is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Jazz Band Director at Winona State University. He received his B.A. in Religion from Davidson College\, M.M. in Saxophone Performance from Florida State University\, and both his M.Ed and Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. His doctoral work focused on diverse musical literacies and creative practices. His other professional training includes Orff Schulwerk Level I in Kenai\, AK\, and Levels II and III from the University of Kentucky. \nDr. Lohmeyer has developed his pedagogy and research interests through public school teaching experiences in classroom general music\, beginning band\, world drumming\, class guitar\, jazz band\, adaptive music\, and creative composition. He also maintains an active performance schedule in jazz\, classical\, and popular music styles. Dr. Lohmeyer’s publications can be seen in Psychology of Music\, Action\, Criticism\, and Theory for Music Education\, The Orff Echo\, General Music Today\, String Notes\, and The Florida Music Director. He has presented at both the state and national levels on Orff-Schulwerk\, jazz pedagogy\, Popular Music Pedagogy (PMP)\, electronic music composition\, and music in special education. Dr. Lohmeyer’s current research and practice examines diverse musical literacies for the digitally connected world. \nDETAILS: \n\nParticipants are eligible to receive 5 clock hours for attending the workshop. Participants will earn 4 clock-hours for attending the workshop\, and one clock our for attending lunch (pay on your own).\nWater and snacks will be provided.\nPlease bring a recorder and ukulele to the workshop\, if you can.\n\nQuestions?
