DESCRIPTION:Perpich Center for Arts Education would like to invite you to a meeting about all proposals related to arts teacher licensing. Perpich Center\, MDE\, and PELSB are preparing for future rulemaking regarding the teaching licensure standards in the arts—dance\, media arts\, music\, theater\, and visual arts. Reviewing these requirements for adequate reflection of the evolving needs of K-12 students\, schools\, and communities is an important undertaking. This process presents a great opportunity for input from the field\, and the results of this process will have an impact on the future of arts education in our state. Moving forward\, your input and involvement are crucial to ensure a successful outcome. \nThere is one info session available for all proposals/all arts areas: \n\nMonday\, October 6 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION HERE \n\nOther Details: \n\nWhat: We will share the steering committee recommendations and opportunities for participation and feedback. We will explain the steps taken so far and outline the next courses of action. There will also be time for asking clarifying questions. Students will be working in groups and creating a dance combination through the process of using an algorithm with icons to represent the dance. They will be incorporating the idea of function and iteration (CS/math terms). Groups will practice and film their combinations.\n10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Mary Harding will present a lesson to participants on using stories and dance to support literacy goals in the classroom. DESCRIPTION:“THE INTENTION OF TEACHER-TO-TEACHER OBSERVATION IS THAT IT BE A TOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND\, IN TURN\, FOR STUDENT LEARNING.” \nREGISTRATION HERE \nOn November 13 from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm\, join Perpich Center facilitator Michael Buck\, at Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School in St. Louis Park as we visit the music classroom of David Davis.  \nBefore lunch\, we will attend several music classes to observe David’s routines\, procedures and methodology for implementing the Academic Standards for Music in his general music classroom. Participants will watch three\, 50-minute classes – one section each of grades 5\, 2\, and 3. Note that instruction in the music classroom is lead in English\, though some Spanish language will be used. \nFollowing the class instruction\, we will move off-site to get lunch and discuss elements of the instruction that might be applicable in your classroom. Lunch is pay on your own. \nHost teacher David Davis shares: From kindergarteners co-teaching songs from their own cultures to 4th and 5th graders composing original music to honor a community member on an instrument of their choosing\, creativity and student voice are at the heart of my self-design curriculum. My goal is to send the clear message that everyone is a musician regardless of technical skill or musical background. As a Science of Reading (LETRS)-trained educator\, I also integrate rhythmic and tonal literacy through sound-before-sight strategies\, supporting aspects of music literacy\, including speaking (improvising)\, reading\, writing (composing)\, and understanding (audiating) music. DESCRIPTION:Now in it’s third season\, the Elementary Art Cohort is a professional development experience designed for new teachers\, classroom generalists who are teaching their own art\, and Tier 1 and Tier 2 teachers who are new to teaching\, as well as elementary visual arts specialists who want to deepen their practice. Participants will engage in collaborative learning with other educators committed to advancing artistic thinking and creative literacy in elementary learners. Whether you are an experienced art educator refining your approach or a classroom teacher integrating the arts into your curriculum\, this cohort will support your growth with structure\, flexibility\, and inspiration. \nOver the course of the year\, participants will engage with a cycle of learning that centers on big ideas\, artistic inquiry\, studio experimentation\, and reflection. The work is grounded in frameworks such as the Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts\, the Studio Habits of Mind\, and concept-based curriculum and instruction. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2026 Minnesota Dance Summit hosted by Perpich Center for Arts Education! \nREGISTRATION LINK \nRHYTHM AND LEGACY 2.0\nPresented by: Davente Gilreath\, Matthew Wagner\, Ingrid Ciaccia\, and Mary Harding \nDATE AND TIME: \nSaturday\, February 21st from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. \n\n*Please note that we will provide participants with lunch. Thank you! \nABOUT THE SUMMIT: Join us for a day-long exploration of rhythm and legacy\, exploring deeper connections\, highlighting teaching practice\, and sharing how our embodiment influences our teaching. We will start the day with a Pilates session with guest teacher Ingrid Ciaccia to help us warm up. Guest teachers Davente Gilreath and Matthew Wagner return to ground us in physical practice that highlights coordination\, rhythm\, and line. We will delve deeply into styles and genres – modern Afro-Caribbean (Davente) and tap groove (Matthew). As we dance we will question and reframe history\, both ours as teachers and the history of the form. His dance training began at Perpich Center for Arts Education where he was exposed to styles of dance including modern\, ballet\, jazz\, african\, and contact improvisation. Gilreath furthered his dance training at the University of Minnesota where he worked with professors such as Ananya Chatterjea\, Erin Thompson\, and Toni Pierce‐Sands. During this time he was also able to perform and create work with Minnesota‐based companies such as Threads Dance Project and Contempo Physical Dance (with Marciano Silva dos Santos). Gilreath Joined Garth Fagan Dance in 2014 and during his 8 years with the company performed numerous key works from the Fagan cannon around the country including new works choreographed by PJ Pennewell the company director. He was promoted to senior company member and appointed the Director of the Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble. He also taught Intermediate/Advanced Fagan Technique for the Garth Fagan Dance School and for the Garth Fagan Summer Movement Institute. Gilreath is now a dance instructor at The University of Minnesota where he teaches Contemporary\, African Diasporic Movement and Jazz. In the last 3 years since returning to Minneapolis he has danced for choreographers Joe Chvala\, Darrius Strong\, and has just joined Ananya Dance Theatre. He has set choreography for senior students at TU Dance\, Perpich Center for Arts Education (2023) and in his own solo work “Rumination” (which premiered in Choreographers’ Evening\, Walker Art Center\, Nov 2024). \nMATTHEW WAGNER BIO\nMatthew Is an Assistant Professor of Dance and Musical Theater at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research is focused in dances of the African Diaspora like tap and jazz\, and numerous other percussive and improvisational dance forms. Professionally\, his work has been seen at the 92nd St. Y\, St. Marks\, Theater by the Sea\, TexArts\, UMD\, Perpich Center for Arts Education\, Renegade Theater Company\, Nor-Shor Theater\, and with his former Tap company Step Brothers NYC. Matthew likes to incorporate a sense of play and exploration into his work\, encouraging students to be bold in their choices. Teachers like Mary Harding\, Suyenne Simoes\, Susan Hebach\, Roxane Butterfly and Sharon Levi have had an immense impact on his practice. \nINGRID CIACCIA BIO\nIngrid is a dance educator and certified Yoga and Pilates instructor. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and German Cultural Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. \n\nDriven by a passion for exploring the relationship between body\, mind\, and movement\, Ingrid’s work blends artistry with technical precision. As Studio Manager and Instructor at St. Paul Pilates and Fitness\, she guides clients through breath-synchronized exercises that build strength\, flexibility\, and stamina while nurturing body awareness and emotional well-being. (formerly Media Arts Cohort Level 2) \nWhy Join this Cohort? \nThe Media Arts Advanced Cohort is for educators who have completed the Introduction Cohort (or equivalent experience) and are ready to push their creative\, technical\, and pedagogical boundaries. This is a year-long professional learning community where participants operate as artists\, critics\, and curriculum designers—expanding their media fluency while developing the intellectual rigor to mentor students in creating media that matters. \nParticipants will dive into advanced storytelling structures\, nuanced image-making\, cinematic editing principles\, and the integration of animation\, mixed media\, and generative AI as intentional creative tools. The work builds on foundational skills but moves toward more sophisticated curricular design anchored in conceptual transfer\, enduring understandings\, and authentic student engagement. \nThis is a space to experiment\, problem-solve\, and engage in meaningful dialogue with colleagues who are equally committed to evolving their media arts practice. \nAPPLY HERE \nCohort Members Can Expect: \n\nHands-on media experiences across 2D\, 3D\, digital\, and mixed media\nAdvanced production techniques in video\, photography\, animation\, and multimedia\nExploration of cinematic\, design\, and visual culture principles\nEthical and identity-centered approaches to media creation\nRefined critique protocols and responsive feedback structures\nDevelopment of advanced\, concept-based curriculum aligned to the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Media Arts\nA professional network for sharing\, revising\, and field-testing lessons and units\nResources and exemplars to take directly into your classroom practice\nPersonalized feedback and coaching as you implement new strategies and approaches\n\nThis Cohort is Ideal for: \n\nEducators who have completed the Media Arts Level 1 Cohort\nExperienced media arts teachers seeking to expand creative and technical fluency\nVisual arts educators ready to integrate advanced media concepts into their teaching\n\nExpectations for Joining the Cohort:\n \n\nTeaching or seeking to teach media arts in an integrated or standalone course offering this year\nAbility and commitment to attend all three in-person sessions at Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley\nAbility to collaborate and engage in hands-on media arts experiences\n\nCohort Meeting Dates (three all day workshops): \nThe Media Arts Advanced Cohort will meet in person at Perpich Center for Arts Education three times throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. These are full-day sessions (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) with a break for lunch.
