Perpich Center\, MDE\, and PELSB are preparing for future rulemaking regarding the teaching licensure standards in the arts—dance\, media arts\, music\, theater\, and visual arts. Reviewing these requirements for adequate reflection of the evolving needs of K-12 students\, schools\, and communities is an important undertaking. This process presents a great opportunity for input from the field\, and the results of this process will have an impact on the future of arts education in our state. Moving forward\, your input and involvement are crucial to ensure a successful outcome. \nThere is one info session available for all proposals/all arts areas: \n\nMonday\, October 6 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION HERE \n\nOther Details: \n\nWhat: We will share the steering committee recommendations and opportunities for participation and feedback. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! Participants are strongly encouraged to attend as a team: arts educator + non-arts/classroom educator(s). \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Gaia Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nOnce you arrive to campus\, follow the road around to the left and past the soccer field. Dana received the Founder’s Award from the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Education from USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology). A former Board Member of the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA)\, and USITT\, Dana led the BACKstage Exam Working Group for USITT. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! Seniors execute and thoroughly document a sustained project of their own design over the course of 4th quarter. Projects may be connected to creative collaborative production and may take the form of\, but are not limited to: a research paper\, creation of an original work – play\, movement\, cabaret\, costume\, set design\, voice over\, sound score\, etc. This serves as the “capstone” Perpich experience\, bringing together two years of coursework and productions in theater arts and musical theater\, and preparing students for life and work after departing Perpich Arts High School. Instructors Tory Peterson and Kevin Hohlstein serve as resources in the planning stages\, advise on the progress of the project\, and evaluate its effectiveness and quality. \nEach Senior is allotted 10 minutes to use however they choose to develop their Capstone Project. When working with other Seniors\, their time can be pooled together to showcase work. Juniors are cast as needed in certain Capstones. Each Senior is given a Community Mentor\, a professional in the field that supports Senior Capstone work\, from theater directors\, performers\, costume design\, voice talent\, and animators. \nThe evening will be made up of four solo performances and two short plays.\n\nPerformances consist of:\n\n\nCharli Pedersen – an epistolary performance based on their great grandfather’s letters.\nGreta “Gerwig” Kunene – a solo performance in the thematic styling of Roger Guenveur Smith\nIan Garrido-Lavender – a movement/clowning/commedia piece\nMiryam Donsker – a “spoof” written with a song and characters from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”\nWarren Mulholland Coler (Directing) & Olivia Solinger (Acting) – along with four Juniors will produce “Duet for Dog and Bear” by playwright Sybil Rosen\nTory Peterson\, along with three Juniors\, will produce an immersive scene from Tina Howe’s play “Museum” in the Perpich Visual Arts gallery\n\nAnthony Sisler-Neuman (Theater 2000) is the professional theater mentor for all 2025 Theater Seniors. Anthony is cofounder for Graceful Monsters Educational Theatre Collective\, a process-driven educational theatre in Minneapolis\, MN that fosters a safe space for young artists to create\, learn\, and be empowered to explore their own stories. He grew up as a theater kid in the Twin Cities\, working at most of the local youth companies. He went on to study theater at Perpich Arts High School where he learned the love for verbatim theater and shifted gears to playwriting at Columbia College Chicago. Anthony has been directing and educating youth since 2012\, while continuing to work as a theater professional. His lifelong dream of having an educational theatre collective has finally come true\, alongside his wife\, which is truly the only way it could have happened. He is an avid believer that theater changes lives and continues to be inspired by the young artists he works with every day.

For her writing\, she has received awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. Teresa’s true passion is digging in her garden that overlooks the Mni Sota River valley and feeding friends and family. \nRecent Books by Teresa Peterson: \n\nPerennial Ceremony: Lessons and Gifts from a Dakota Garden (2024) – prose\, poetry\, and recipes guiding us through the Dakota seasons and lessons from Teresa’s life as a gardener\, gatherer\, and lover of the land\nVoices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers (2022)\, written with her uncle\, Walter “Super” LaBatte Jr. – stories shared through five generations of their family; selected by the Native American One Read by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Understand Native Minnesota campaign\nGrasshopper Girl (2022) – this story includes a Dakota tale of Uŋktomi (spider)\, one of the trickster stories Teresa’s mother heard growing up; highly recommended by American Indians in Children’s Literature (AICL) and featured as one of Nick Jr.’s children’s books to celebrate Native American Heritage Month\n\nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a free book. \nWe look forward to talking with Teresa Peterson about her work and how K-12 educators can bring the experiences she writes about into their classrooms! \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.

DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETS HERE \nPerpich Arts High School Theater Ensemble presents “RUNAWAYS” \n“Runaways\,” a collage of songs\, monologues\, and scenes about children who have left home — their problems\, fantasies\, and methods of survival — is Elizabeth Swados’ total creation. “Runaways” is one person’s vision. It was her original idea and she had been working on it compulsively for years. For months in 1978-79\, Swados interviewed and observed runaways; on the basis of this research\, she wrote the words and music for the play. It started as a journey at the Public Theater in New York and transferred to Broadway in 1979 where it received numerous Tony Award nominations. \n“When creating meaning for the play ‘Runaways’\, it’s important to not just go into the inner city. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, March 11\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 pm) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, March 11\, our guest is Kim Sigafus (White Earth Nation)\, an internationally-published\, award-winning author and speaker. “Bekaadiziikwe” is her Ojibwa name\, meaning “Quiet Woman”. Kim writes in many genres including Native American fiction\, non-fiction\, YA\, and children’s books. She’s written plays that have been produced\, too. Kim also enjoys sharing her culture with others. She travels throughout the United States doing Native programs for schools and libraries\, and has presented at conferences and museums including the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. \nSome of the books by Kim Sigafus: \n\nNative Writers\, Voices of Power\nNative Elders\, Sharing Their Wisdom\nNowhere to Hide\nAutumn’s Dawn\nFinding Grace\nWhisper to the Sky\nYesterday’s Rain\nA Quiet Storm\n\nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a free book. \nWe look forward to talking with Kim Sigafus about her work and how K-12 educators can bring her experiences into their classrooms! \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.
