DESCRIPTION:Perpich Center for Arts Education would like to invite you to a meeting about dance and theater teacher licensing. Perpich Center\, MDE\, and PELSB are preparing for future rulemaking regarding the teaching licensure standards in the arts—dance\, media arts\, music\, theater\, and visual arts. Reviewing these requirements for adequate reflection of the evolving needs of K-12 students\, schools\, and communities is an important undertaking. This process presents a great opportunity for input from the field\, and the results of this process will have an impact on the future of arts education in our state. Moving forward\, your input and involvement are crucial to ensure a successful outcome. \nThere are two info sessions available for dance and theater: \n\nTuesday\, September 23 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\, or\nWednesday\, October 1 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION HERE \n\nOther Details: \n\nWhat: We will share the steering committee recommendations and opportunities for participation and feedback. We will explain the steps taken so far and outline the next courses of action. There will also be time for asking clarifying questions. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThursday\, August 14\, 2025 (9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe’ve heard from several teachers across Minnesota that they are ready to develop or refine lessons through an arts integration lens but could use a bit of experienced support. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! Participants are strongly encouraged to attend as a team: arts educator + non-arts/classroom educator(s). \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Gaia Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nOnce you arrive to campus\, follow the road around to the left and past the soccer field. The Gaia Building is the 2-story white building back by the woods. Dana served as the technical editor for “Dramatics Magazine\,” “Teaching Theatre Journal\,” “Basic Drama Projects”: 9th Edition\, and “Concert Lighting: The Art and Business of Entertainment Lighting”. Dana received the Founder’s Award from the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) and the Distinguished Achievement Award for Education from USITT (United States Institute for Theatre Technology). A former Board Member of the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA)\, and USITT\, Dana led the BACKstage Exam Working Group for USITT. An ETCP Certified Rigger (Theatre) and Recognized Trainer\, Dana presents workshops for students and educators on appropriate procedures for the safe and effective use of counterweight rigging. Might this include teachers from your school district? \nThis summer we have two opportunities for workshopping your arts integration ideas—Thursday\, June 12 and Thursday\, August 14. These days will begin with an introduction to our arts integration continuum and examples of integrated lessons\, but then the majority of each day will be supported work time. Bring your ideas\, teaching resources\, and one or more colleagues to Perpich Center for either or both days. Here’s a great opportunity to get a head start on lesson planning for the new school year! Seniors execute and thoroughly document a sustained project of their own design over the course of 4th quarter. Projects may be connected to creative collaborative production and may take the form of\, but are not limited to: a research paper\, creation of an original work – play\, movement\, cabaret\, costume\, set design\, voice over\, sound score\, etc. This serves as the “capstone” Perpich experience\, bringing together two years of coursework and productions in theater arts and musical theater\, and preparing students for life and work after departing Perpich Arts High School. Instructors Tory Peterson and Kevin Hohlstein serve as resources in the planning stages\, advise on the progress of the project\, and evaluate its effectiveness and quality. \nEach Senior is allotted 10 minutes to use however they choose to develop their Capstone Project. When working with other Seniors\, their time can be pooled together to showcase work. Juniors are cast as needed in certain Capstones. Each Senior is given a Community Mentor\, a professional in the field that supports Senior Capstone work\, from theater directors\, performers\, costume design\, voice talent\, and animators. \nThe evening will be made up of four solo performances and two short plays.\n\nPerformances consist of:\n\n\nCharli Pedersen – an epistolary performance based on their great grandfather’s letters.\nGreta “Gerwig” Kunene – a solo performance in the thematic styling of Roger Guenveur Smith\nIan Garrido-Lavender – a movement/clowning/commedia piece\nMiryam Donsker – a “spoof” written with a song and characters from “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”\nWarren Mulholland Coler (Directing) & Olivia Solinger (Acting) – along with four Juniors will produce “Duet for Dog and Bear” by playwright Sybil Rosen\nTory Peterson\, along with three Juniors\, will produce an immersive scene from Tina Howe’s play “Museum” in the Perpich Visual Arts gallery\n\nAnthony Sisler-Neuman (Theater 2000) is the professional theater mentor for all 2025 Theater Seniors. Anthony is cofounder for Graceful Monsters Educational Theatre Collective\, a process-driven educational theatre in Minneapolis\, MN that fosters a safe space for young artists to create\, learn\, and be empowered to explore their own stories. He grew up as a theater kid in the Twin Cities\, working at most of the local youth companies. He went on to study theater at Perpich Arts High School where he learned the love for verbatim theater and shifted gears to playwriting at Columbia College Chicago. Anthony has been directing and educating youth since 2012\, while continuing to work as a theater professional. His lifelong dream of having an educational theatre collective has finally come true\, alongside his wife\, which is truly the only way it could have happened. He is an avid believer that theater changes lives and continues to be inspired by the young artists he works with every day.

Kim writes in many genres including Native American fiction\, non-fiction\, YA\, and children’s books. She’s written plays that have been produced\, too. Kim also enjoys sharing her culture with others. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nIn January – March 2025: Perpich Center for Arts Education is hosting a series of virtual sessions on three topics required for renewal of Tier 3 and Tier 4 licenses in Minnesota. This year\, topics will be offered as both a one-hour session (part of a double header) and a more interactive two-hour session! Choose the date and option that works best for you. \nSUPPORTING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT/PBIS IN ARTS CLASSES – Related to Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS)\, this session focuses on nurturing a supportive classroom community\, the impact of adult decisions on community\, and resulting student engagement in arts classes. One-hour sessions: Wednesday\, January 22 (5:20 p.m. – 6:20 p.m.) or Thursday\, February 6 (4:15 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.). DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, February 4\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 p.m.) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, February 4\, our guest is Sam Zimmerman\, a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Sam is in a unique position to connect his art and K-12 education\, having worked more than 20 years as a special education teacher and school administrator. \nSam’s art continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling with themes of environmental stewardship and conservation. His first book\, Following My Spirit Home\, is a collection of paintings and stories from his first year back in Minnesota after living on the East Coast. His artwork is held in private collections in the United States and abroad and in public installations in the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center\, Voyageur National Park\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, and the communities of Duluth and Grand Marais. Sam has received grant awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council\, Northland Foundation Maada’ookiing\, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation. \nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a copy of How the Birds Got their Songs (2024) by Travis Zimmerman\, illustrated by Sam Zimmerman. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.\nShortly after February 4\, a video recording of the interview will be posted on the Perpich Center’s Native Authors & Artists webpage.
