DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETS HERE \nPerpich Arts High School Theater Ensemble presents “RUNAWAYS” \n“Runaways\,” a collage of songs\, monologues\, and scenes about children who have left home — their problems\, fantasies\, and methods of survival — is Elizabeth Swados’ total creation. “Runaways” is one person’s vision. It was her original idea and she had been working on it compulsively for years. For months in 1978-79\, Swados interviewed and observed runaways; on the basis of this research\, she wrote the words and music for the play. It started as a journey at the Public Theater in New York and transferred to Broadway in 1979 where it received numerous Tony Award nominations. \n“When creating meaning for the play ‘Runaways’\, it’s important to not just go into the inner city. Don’t look to just talk with the child whose parents abused them and don’t expect that ‘Runaways’ are only kids. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, March 11\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 pm) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, March 11\, our guest is Kim Sigafus (White Earth Nation)\, an internationally-published\, award-winning author and speaker. “Bekaadiziikwe” is her Ojibwa name\, meaning “Quiet Woman”. Kim writes in many genres including Native American fiction\, non-fiction\, YA\, and children’s books. She’s written plays that have been produced\, too. Kim also enjoys sharing her culture with others. She travels throughout the United States doing Native programs for schools and libraries\, and has presented at conferences and museums including the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. \nSome of the books by Kim Sigafus: \n\nNative Writers\, Voices of Power\nNative Elders\, Sharing Their Wisdom\nNowhere to Hide\nAutumn’s Dawn\nFinding Grace\nWhisper to the Sky\nYesterday’s Rain\nA Quiet Storm\n\nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a free book. \nWe look forward to talking with Kim Sigafus about her work and how K-12 educators can bring her experiences into their classrooms! \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, February 4\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 p.m.) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, February 4\, our guest is Sam Zimmerman\, a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Sam is in a unique position to connect his art and K-12 education\, having worked more than 20 years as a special education teacher and school administrator. \nSam’s art continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling with themes of environmental stewardship and conservation. His first book\, Following My Spirit Home\, is a collection of paintings and stories from his first year back in Minnesota after living on the East Coast. His artwork is held in private collections in the United States and abroad and in public installations in the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center\, Voyageur National Park\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, and the communities of Duluth and Grand Marais. Sam has received grant awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council\, Northland Foundation Maada’ookiing\, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation. \nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a copy of How the Birds Got their Songs (2024) by Travis Zimmerman\, illustrated by Sam Zimmerman. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.\nShortly after February 4\, a video recording of the interview will be posted on the Perpich Center’s Native Authors & Artists webpage.

Grants can be an excellent source of revenue\, but where do you find them? How do you write them? And what else do you need to know to make this stream of funding worthwhile? In this workshop\, we’ll cover the basic who\, what\, where\, when\, why\, and how of grant writing. We’ll also identify key sources and tools for finding more\, as well as breaking down the specific and unique writing style required for grants. Participants will have plenty of time for questions! Whether it is your first time researching\, writing\, submitting\, and managing a grant\, or you just need a refresher\, join us and sharpen your grant writing skills and savvy. \nPRESENTER: The presenter for this session is Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Ph.D.\, Perpich’s Theater Education Specialist\, and a theater educator\, artist\, administrator\, and scholar with over 20 years of experience working with students and artists of all ages. SUMMARY:MINNESOTA K-12 ACADEMIC STANDARDS IN THE ARTS VIRTUAL SEMINAR FOR SCHOOL LEADERS
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HERE \nAre you new to your role as a school leader and/or ready to gain a deeper understanding of the newest Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in the Arts? The Minnesota Legislature set last school year (2023-2024) as the implementation date of the new Arts standards. And\, effective August 1\, 2024\, Minn. Statute 120B.018 requires use of these standards in all K-12 arts classes — there is no longer the option of basing student learning in arts classes on locally-developed standards. \nThis 1-hour seminar is the perfect opportunity for school leaders and arts educators to: \n\nLearn more about the Minnesota K-12 Arts standards and benchmarks\, and\nCollect resources to support the work of music\, visual arts\, media arts\, dance\, and theater teachers in standards implementation.\n\nINTENDED PARTICIPANTS: This seminar is intended for K-12 school leaders and arts educators. \nFACILITATOR: The facilitator for this seminar is Dr. Wendy Barden\, Director of Professional Development and Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education. \nDATES AND TIMES: This session is offered four times.
