This regular series takes place at Perpich Center for Arts Education. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with a special guest\, provides resource lists\, and offers time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. Can’t make it to Perpich Center for the “live” event? Watch our website for resources and a video recording of each interview. \nOn Tuesday\, March 5\, we are excited to welcome Jonathan Thunder as our guest! \nJonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe) is the illustrator of the award-recognized Bowwow Powwow by Brenda J. Child (Red Lake Ojibwe). We look forward to talking with Jonathan about his work as an illustrator\, along with his work as an artist using a wide range of mediums. He is known for his surreal paintings\, digitally animated films\, and installations in which he addresses subject matter of personal experience and social commentary. \nJonathan attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe\, NM and studied Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in Minneapolis\, MN at the Art Institute International. His work has been featured in many state\, regional\, and national exhibitions\, and is in the permanent collections of museums and universities. Thunder is the recipient of a 2020-21 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award for his risk taking in painting. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight refreshments will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.

Allison is the Tribal Liaison & Native Relations Coordinator for the Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities\, and serves as president of the American Indian Library Association. This past fall\, Allison served as the Native American Exhibition Outreach Assistant at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. And\, for five years\, Allison served as the American Indian Community Liaison at the Hennepin County Library\, where she was instrumental in raising Native representation on the shelves and behind the scenes\, making libraries more welcoming to Native community members. \nAllison holds a B.A. in Humanities from Fort Lewis College\, Durango\, CO. She has presented at various conferences\, including the Association of Tribal Archives\, Libraries & Museums and the Minnesota Library Association Conference. And how can I put it into practice in my arts classroom?\n\nCulturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) is a framework for the practice of teaching that was coined in recent years by Django Paris and emerged out of a lineage of Culturally Relevant and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy cultivated by Gloria Ladson-Billings\, Geneva Gay\, and others. \nIn a rapidly diversifying educational landscape\, CSP proposes that school can be a place for sustaining\, rather than eliminating\, the cultural practices of communities of color. What does this mean in Minnesota\, where roughly 34% of students identify as BIPOC\, in contrast to only 5% of educators? DESCRIPTION:The first curriculum show reveals the multitude of efforts together in the first quarter Media Arts and Visual Arts classes. Juniors were first introduced to their foundational courses\, a taste of what their lives as artists at Perpich might be like. Seniors engaged in analyzing all the work they have made and how the art might relate to honing their goals as a maker in today’s world. The exhibition features artwork by every Studio Arts student at Perpich. The artwork was made for classroom assignments and showcases the range within the Perpich Studio Arts curriculum. During the exhibition\, animation and cinema work is screened in the Performance Hall. The exhibition is showing through January 12\, 2024. \nDarkroom is the primary photography class in the Media Arts program. New students learn to shoot black & white film\, process negatives by hand\, make contact sheets\, and print final images on light-sensitive paper with an enlarger. DESCRIPTION:As of June 21\, this event is currently postponed.\n  \nREGISTRATION HERE \nPerpich Center for Arts Education is excited to host Equity Training with PENUMBRA! \nEquity Training with PENUMBRA will equip participants in their own racial equity engagement and increase their comfort and dexterity to support deeper racial equity efforts and increased empathy and authenticity. Penumbra’s racial equity framework provides a step-by-step process for assessing\, addressing\, and sustaining racial equity efforts that can be employed at the individual and institutional levels\, meeting people where they are and pushing them to reach their growth edge with confidence and a sense of purpose. Their unique approach\, based in storytelling and embodied theater practices\, will offer a fresh take. \nDATE AND TIME: Thursday\, June 22\, 2023 (10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) \nCOST: FREE \nLOCATION: Virtual – A Zoom link will be sent to participants before the workshop. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: For the first part of the workshop\, Penumbra has commissioned a series of monologues from a diverse group of artists. These deeply personal stories about early encounters with race and racism are powerful\, poignant\, and create space for compassionate dialogue about how race affects individuals and relationships. \nIn the second part\, participants will be invited to think critically about how people are susceptible to “group think\,” which often contains biased and unexamined messages about race\, class\, gender\, and more. Microaggressions will be explored\, and participants will be armed with a toolkit for understanding and disrupting existing conditions that are laden with inequity and bias. The content connects our ability to practice “upstanding” rather than “bystanding” and offers participants an opportunity to learn a powerful racial equity framework that can raise critical questions and guide implementation. DESCRIPTION:Perpich Arts High School Studio Arts Department Presents: Junior Curriculum Exhibition “2-For-1 Combo” \nRESERVE TICKETS HERE \n“2 for 1 combo\, limited time only! We here at Perpich use all the freshest ingredients and pour our hearts into the pieces we create to make sure that they are the best in the business. To celebrate the end of the school year\, our juniors have been working hard to give you a limited time offer: two pieces for the price of one\, served up to you on a bittersweet plate as we bid goodbye to school and hello to summer!” \nThe exhibition includes artwork created in Perpich art classes this year by members of the Class of 2024 and features animation\, video art\, drawings\, paintings\, darkroom-based analog & digital photography\, prints\, sculpture\, and digital art. The students selected two pieces of artwork that they were proud of or they felt represented them well to be displayed for the exhibition. \nA media screening is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Performance Hall. \nWhile you’re on campus\, be sure to visit the Basta Gallery for the Color + Light exhibition. For this studio-based photography class in the Media Arts program at Perpich Arts High School\, students are provided with digital SLR cameras and given access to the Media Arts photo studio. Over the course of the 3rd academic quarter\, photographers study the fundamental relationship between color\, quality of light\, and mood. Emphasis is placed on producing technically proficient and creative photographs through lighting\, color filtration\, and post-production of images. Technical\, aesthetic\, and conceptual aspects of working with color and light are explored in depth. Color + Light is showing in the Basta Gallery from March\, 2023 through November\, 2023.
