Our goal is to support elementary visual arts teachers who are 1) new to their career or 2) new to teaching elementary art or 3) a classroom generalist teacher who teaches their own art within their classroom. \nRegardless of which group you find yourself in\, our comprehensive program is made for you\, ensuring that you can confidently teach in and through the arts. \nHere’s what this enriching opportunity offers: \n\nEffective Strategies: Discover strategies that work\, empowering you to nurture creativity while teaching visual arts.\nConfidence and Expertise: Gain the confidence and expertise needed to lead engaging art learning experiences..\nInvaluable Resources: Access a wealth of resources to enhance your teaching approach.\nInstructional Coaches: Benefit from the guidance of experienced instructional coaches who understand the intricacies of elementary art education.\nClassroom Materials Management: Learn how to efficiently manage art materials in your classroom.\nEffective Artwork Assessment: Develop the skills to assess artwork effectively and meaningfully.\n\nEmpower your students with high-quality art instruction that captures their interest and unlocks their artistic potential. This regular series takes place at Perpich Center for Arts Education. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with a special guest\, provides resource lists\, and offers time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. Watch our website for resources and a video recording of each interview. \nOn Tuesday\, March 5\, we are excited to welcome Jonathan Thunder as our guest! \nJonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe) is the illustrator of the award-recognized Bowwow Powwow by Brenda J. Child (Red Lake Ojibwe). We look forward to talking with Jonathan about his work as an illustrator\, along with his work as an artist using a wide range of mediums. He is known for his surreal paintings\, digitally animated films\, and installations in which he addresses subject matter of personal experience and social commentary. \nJonathan attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe\, NM and studied Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in Minneapolis\, MN at the Art Institute International. His work has been featured in many state\, regional\, and national exhibitions\, and is in the permanent collections of museums and universities. Allison is the Tribal Liaison & Native Relations Coordinator for the Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities\, and serves as president of the American Indian Library Association. This past fall\, Allison served as the Native American Exhibition Outreach Assistant at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. And\, for five years\, Allison served as the American Indian Community Liaison at the Hennepin County Library\, where she was instrumental in raising Native representation on the shelves and behind the scenes\, making libraries more welcoming to Native community members. \nAllison holds a B.A. in Humanities from Fort Lewis College\, Durango\, CO. She has presented at various conferences\, including the Association of Tribal Archives\, Libraries & Museums and the Minnesota Library Association Conference. SUMMARY:CULTURALLY SUSTAINING PEDAGOGY IN THE ARTS
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Wednesday\, November 15\, 2023 (4:30 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.)\n \nDESCRIPTION:\nCulturally Sustaining Pedagogy. What is it? Why is it important? And how can I put it into practice in my arts classroom?\n\nCulturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) is a framework for the practice of teaching that was coined in recent years by Django Paris and emerged out of a lineage of Culturally Relevant and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy cultivated by Gloria Ladson-Billings\, Geneva Gay\, and others. \nIn a rapidly diversifying educational landscape\, CSP proposes that school can be a place for sustaining\, rather than eliminating\, the cultural practices of communities of color. What does this mean in Minnesota\, where roughly 34% of students identify as BIPOC\, in contrast to only 5% of educators? And what does it look like in arts classrooms\, where opportunities for students’ cultural expression may or may not be plentiful\, and where educators’ identities may or may not align with their students? \nJoin us for a brief overview of the big ideas underpinning CSP\, and leave with practical ideas about how to begin this challenging\, rewarding\, necessary work! \nDETAILS: \n\nA Zoom link will be sent to those who have registered prior to the event.\nPresenters for this virtual session are Mary Harding\, Dance Education Specialist and Dr. Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Theater Education Specialist.\nThis is the first of three sessions focused on cultural competency in arts teaching and learning.\nA clock hours form will be provided following this session.

SUMMARY:STUDIO ARTS (MEDIA ARTS AND VISUALS ARTS) CURRICULAR EXHIBITION "FALLING INTO RHYTHM"
DESCRIPTION:The first curriculum show reveals the multitude of efforts together in the first quarter Media Arts and Visual Arts classes. Juniors were first introduced to their foundational courses\, a taste of what their lives as artists at Perpich might be like. Seniors engaged in analyzing all the work they have made and how the art might relate to honing their goals as a maker in today’s world. The exhibition features artwork by every Studio Arts student at Perpich. The artwork was made for classroom assignments and showcases the range within the Perpich Studio Arts curriculum. During the exhibition\, animation and cinema work is screened in the Performance Hall. The exhibition is showing through January 12\, 2024. \nDarkroom is the primary photography class in the Media Arts program. New students learn to shoot black & white film\, process negatives by hand\, make contact sheets\, and print final images on light-sensitive paper with an enlarger. Please visit the Basta Gallery during the exhibition to behold the best 8″x10″ gelatin silver photographs created in our darkroom so far this school year. \nRESERVE FREE TICKETS HERE
