SUMMARY:MAPPING THE NEW MINNESOTA MUSIC STANDARDS - VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HERE \nDESCRIPTION:\nHere’s a chance to gain insights and ideas about the new Minnesota standards/benchmarks in music that will be useful in revising (or creating) your curriculum plan. Please be aware of the May 2020 Arts Standards FAQ from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) stating: \n\nThe arts standards were recently disapproved due to lack of statutory authority\, and MDE is working on next steps.\nIf you’ve already started the process of transitioning to the new arts standards\, it is fine to continue.\nThe timeline for implementation remains the 2021-2022 school year (13 months from now). If the disapproval is upheld\, implementation will likely be delayed until 2022-2023.\nThe new 2018 arts standards are based on the 2014 National Core Arts Standards\, contemporary research\, and best practices in arts education. Supporting implementation will lead to improved instruction and learning for your students.\n\nThis half day workshop will be organized into three parts (with breaks): \nPART 1: STANDARDS OVERVIEW\, including additional resources to help students connect to “contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities.” Together\, we will examine the standards and benchmarks in various formats. \nPART 2: TAKING STOCK OF YOUR CURRENT FRAMEWORK\, including foundational knowledge\, ideas for assessment\, integration of English Language Arts standards and Social Emotional Learning skills. Begin a gap analysis of the new benchmarks. \nPART 3: TOOLS AND STRUCTURES\, including a unit template and four mapping structures that could be tweaked or revised to fit your district’s requirements. Sample Enduring Understanding\, Essential Questions\, and “I can…” statements available. \nFollowing the workshop – and throughout the summer – Wendy Barden will be available to work with you remotely on specific questions. Email Wendy to set up a time to meet: wendy.barden@pcae.k12.mn.us \nPrior to the workshop time\, registrants will receive a link to the meeting along with all the handouts. \nThere is no cost for to attend this workshop\, and 3 CEU hours will be earned. The day is hosted by Dr. Wendy Barden\, Music Education Specialist in Professional Development & Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education.

SUMMARY:"A BREATH FOR GEORGE" SCREENING
DESCRIPTION:Creating Racial Justice Performance in a Time of Pandemic: New Dawn Theatre Company’s film A Breath for George\nScreening presented in partnership with Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota at the 2020 Virtual CTAM Conference \nWe know the transformative power of theater when it comes to addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time. This summer\, the fight for racial justice was re-ignited worldwide after the murder of George Floyd\, amidst the context of a global pandemic that is disproportionately affecting BIPOC communities\, and radically shifting both education and performance into new\, distanced forms. In this context\, New Dawn Theatre (NDT) Company created A Breath for George. The film was crafted from individually recorded performances of monologues\, songs\, poems\, movement\, and interviews by local black and POCI artists and scholars\, and then woven together and projected onto the exterior of theater buildings across the Twin Cities. In this session\, join NDT’s Artistic Director Austene Van and Perpich’s Stephanie Lein Walseth for an online screening of A Breath for George\, followed by a virtual Q&A and dialogue session. \nA Breath for George was created by New Dawn Theatre and Minnesota artists as a platform to: honor Mr. Floyd’s life; speak to this moment and moments past openly and honestly; and to share avenues which promote hope and positive changes for the future. A Breath for George gives voices to the ways Black citizens & residents historically have been negatively affected emotionally\, physically and financially by systemic racism and nationwide police violence \n“There is value in people knowing that they are not alone in the way that they are feeling right now. There is also value in speaking truth to people who have never heard our stories or ever been in position to hear our stories\,” says New Dawn Artistic Director Austene Van. \nWHERE: Virtual – The link to join this virtual workshop will be sent to participants the day before the workshop. \nWHO: Participants: This session is centered on a theater performance piece (compiled through film)\, though the learning will apply across the performing arts\, media arts\, speech\, and communications. It is open to all Minnesota K-12 and College/University Arts Educators and Directors.\nRegistered CTAM Conference participants are warmly invited to join us for this session.\nEducators and Directors that are not registered for the conference may attend the session for free through Perpich\, by special agreement with CTAM. \nPresenter: Austene Van\, Artistic Director of New Dawn Theatre Company\nFacilitator: Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Theater Education Specialist\, Perpich Center for Arts Education\nNew Dawn Theatre Company’s A Breath for George \nDETAILS: Registration for the workshop is limited to 200 people.\nCEUs will be provided.\nThis workshop is hosted and paid for by the Perpich Center for Arts Education Professional Development and Resource Programs team\, in conjunction with the CTAM 2020 Virtual Conference – (Re)Connecting. \nPhoto credit: Regina Marie Williams
