SUMMARY:GROOVING TOWARD EMPATHY: JAZZ DANCE FOR EMPATHY BUILDING WITH ERINN LIEBHARD
DESCRIPTION:*Perpich 2021 MN Summer Dance Workshops* \nGROOVING TOWARD EMPATHY: JAZZ DANCE FOR EMPATHY BUILDING with Erinn Liebhard \nThis movement session introduces an approach to teaching jazz dance that prioritizes groove\, interaction and improvisation\, addressing these themes in the contexts of the African diasporic roots of the form and how they encourage the development of embodied empathy. Interacting with one another through embodied groove creates danced empathy because rhythm is at our shared human core. Providing people ways to simultaneously express themselves both as individuals and members of a group creates opportunities for them to experience their own backgrounds\, cultures and interests next to those of others\, appreciating all shared ideas and honoring how they intersect. Session participants will be led through a series of tools for and discussion on embodying groove and improvising with it individually\, in partners and in groups to encourage the development of embodied empathy within their own communities. \nThis workshop is open to all dance and theater educators as well as other arts teachers. \nWORKSHOP DATE/TIME:\nTuesday\, June 29\, 2021\n9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. \nLOCATION:\nVirtual or location TBD \nRegistration Fee: FREE \nYou will receive 1.5 Professional Development clock hours upon completion of the workshop. \nQuestions or comments? SUMMARY:MARGINALIZED VOICES IN MUSIC EDUCATION
DESCRIPTION:MARGINALIZED VOICES IN MUSIC EDUCATION\, Brent C. Talbot\, ed. (Routledge\, 2018). \nMARGINALIZED VOICES IN MUSIC EDUCATION explores the American culture of music teaching and learning by looking at marginalization and privilege in music education as a means to critique prevailing assumptions and paradigms. In ten essays\, authors set out to expand notions of who we believe we are as music educators and who we want to become. This book is a collection of perspectives by some of the leading and emerging thinkers in the profession. It identifies cases of individuals or groups who have experienced marginalization and shares diverse stories in a struggle for inclusion. Through the telling of these stories\, the authors hope to recast music education as fertile ground for transformation\, experimentation\, and renewal. \nWHAT: You are invited to join other music educators to read and study Talbot’s popular book. \nOUTCOMES: Through participation in this book study\, participants will: \n\nIncrease understanding of access and power in music education\nConsider if\, or how\, music education allows us to actually teach “music for all”\nDevelop stronger connections with other music educators across the state.\n\nWHO: All Minnesota music educators are welcome. Registration is limited to 16. \nFACILITATOR: Wendy Barden\, Music Education Specialist in Professional Development and Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education. \nSCHEDULE OF VIRTUAL MEETINGS: \n\nNow – Secure your copy of MARGINALIZED VOICES IN MUSIC EDUCATION\, Brent C. Talbot\, ed.\nTues\, June 15 (7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) – Discussion on Chapters 1-3 + extra handout\nTues\, June 22 (7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) – Discussion on Chapters 4-6\nTues\, June 29 (7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) – Discussion on Chapters 7-10\n\nTOTAL TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 10 hours including personal reading/reflection and three Tuesday evening discussions. A certificate of CEUs will be provided. \nCOST: There is no cost to participate (other than securing the book on your own).

SUMMARY:DANCING AROUND RACE: MOVING THE CONVERSATION WITH GERALD CASEL

We will explore teacher philosophy. \nThis two day workshop is open to all dance and theater educators as well as other arts teachers.
