SUMMARY:BOOK STUDY: PORTRAITS OF MUSIC EDUCATION AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING: TEACHING MUSIC WITH HEART
DESCRIPTION:This book showcases the inspiring stories and innovative ideas of music educators who are implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction with intentionality in their classrooms at the elementary\, middle\, and high school levels. These teachers share their real-world challenges and triumphs with SEL instruction\, along with many tips\, activities\, lesson plans\, and suggestions for embedding SEL in a way that is musical\, intentional\, and meaningful. Importantly\, Portraits of Music Education and Social Emotional Learning approaches SEL from a culturally relevant and equitable lens\, accounting for the ways in which SEL instruction interacts with culture\, race\, background\, and uniqueness\, therefore making it a powerful tool for embracing social justice and student empowerment. At its core\, SEL gives students the ability to have difficult conversations\, cope with stress\, and navigate challenges. And while each teacher presents their unique approach to SEL\, they come to the same conclusion: SEL is critical to the success of their students and programs. \nGUEST FACILITATORS: \n\nKourtney Ryan teaches general music in grades 1-5 at Valentine Hills Elementary School in the Mounds View School District. They are a graduate of UW Eau Claire and previously worked in the St. Cloud School District.\nPaula Ulicsni Halvorson teaches K-5 general music and 4th and 5th grade orchestra at Kennedy Elementary in Willmar. SUMMARY:MAKING SENSE: AN INVITATION TO THE BODY
DESCRIPTION:Making Sense: An Invitation to the Body\nA One-day Lab/Sharing of Practices for Theater Directors and Educators \nREGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Wednesday\, June 29\, 2022\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nTARGET AUDIENCE: K-12 and College/University Theater Educators and Directors \nDESCRIPTION: This one-day workshop will extend the conversations of the New and Devised Work Collaborative into shared practices. The focus of the day will be on building theater practices\, rituals\, and processes that are deeply and authentically engaging of the body\, and that help us restore and reconnect with ourselves and one another. Together we will co-create containers for inquiry and practice\, with broad framing in these phases throughout the day: breath\, body\, movement\, object\, and story. \nYou need not bring anything except yourself (dressed for movement)\, a notebook\, a water bottle\, your questions\, and a willingness to be present as we connect to our bodies\, our sensations\, and our ability to make meaning in and through movement. This is a time for reconnection and rejuvenation! \nLOCATION:  \nPerpich Center for Arts Education\n6125 Olson Memorial Hwy\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422\n*we will meet in the dance studio* \nDETAILS: \n\nThe workshop co-conveners are Dr. Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Theater Education Specialist in Professional Development and Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education and Dana McConnell\, Theater Educator and Director at St. Charles High School\, St. Mary’s University\, and beyond.\nPresenters may also include members of the New and Devised Work Collaborative – comprised of Theater Educators and Directors across the state of Minnesota and special guests.\nThere is no cost for this workshop and 6 CEU hours are earned.\nLunch and snacks will be provided – please note any dietary restrictions in the registration form.\nQuestions or comments?
