Don’t cancel it! But…how do we continue to perform it? Join “Final Bow for Yellowface” co-founder Phil Chan as he shares his creative practice of reimagining important European works like “Madama Butterfly” and “La Bayadere” for a multiracial audience\, and expand your own toolbox and vocabulary when presenting depictions of non-European cultures on stage. \nPhil Chan is a co-founder of Final Bow for Yellowface\, and author of Final Bow for Yellowface: Dancing between Intention and Impact\, and the President of the Gold Standard Arts Foundation. He is a graduate of Carleton College and an alumnus of the Ailey School. He has held fellowships with NYU\, the Manhattan School of Music\, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts\, and is currently a fellow at Harvard University\, Drexel University\, and the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art in Paris. As a writer\, he served as the Executive Editor for FLATT Magazine and contributed to Dance Europe Magazine\, Dance Magazine\, Dance Business Weekly\, and the Huffington Post\, and current serves on the Advisory Board of Dance Magazine. He served multiple years on the National Endowment for the Arts dance panel and the Jadin Wong Award panel presented by the Asian American Arts Alliance. His latest choreography project\, the “Ballet des Porcelaines\,” premiered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in December 2021 and will tour throughout 2022. He is a Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor of Dance at Carleton College in Fall 2022\, and was just named a Next 50 Arts Leader by the Kennedy Center.

The play received multiple awards and was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. \nMATURE THEMES & STRONG LANGUAGE \nGuest Director Christian Bardin: Christian (she/her and they/them) originally hails from Houston\, Texas. They’ve called the Twin Cities home since graduating from Ken Washington’s BFA program at the U in 2011 and have acted professionally in the Twin Cities since 2009. She believes the best work in any discipline comes at the intersection of great risk\, great craft\, and great love. Favorite “art jobs” are ones where she gets to use her powers for good\, including relationships with CornerHouse’s Forensic Interview trainings\, Pillsbury House + Theatre’s Breaking Ice workshops\, and traditional performance work with the Jungle Theater\, Minnesota Opera\, Guthrie Theater\, The Moving Company\, Park Square Theatre\, and Sandbox Theatre. Christian is proud to have co-directed the devised work The Nature Crown and to have assisted on the regional premiere of Redwood at the Jungle. Their first full-length album of original music is entitled Shorts. Christian has been working with Upstream Arts since 2020. \nPoster by Aiyana Beaulieu (Visual Arts 2024)

These sessions will provide a general outline of the program and application process as well as leave ample time for participant Q&A. (Please attend only one session.) \nREGISTER HERE FOR THE INFORMATIONAL SESSION \nLOCATION: Virtual – The link to join each session will be sent to participants via email on the day of the meeting. \nPlease note: Due to the regulations of the CAPP application process\, questions about the application cannot be answered after the official application opens on Tuesday\, December 6\, 2022. To accomplish this\, \n\nWe will observe Jessica Chipman teach two Intro to Theatre Arts classes for high school students. Pay particular attention to their classroom routines\, rituals\, and community building. Think about your “Ah-ha!” and “I wonder…” moments.\nFollowing the classes\, we’ll enjoy lunch together. Stephanie Lein Walseth will facilitate a discussion of our observations and other topics of interest to participants.\nWe will provide up-to-date COVID-19 protocols closer to December 1st.\nTake away new ideas and strategies for your own teaching!\n\nDETAILS:\nThe day is hosted by Dr. Stephanie Lein Walseth\, Theater Education Specialist of Professional Development & Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education. There is no cost to participate. A certificate for 6 clock hours will be distributed at the end of the day. \nNote: The maximum number of participants is 9.
