DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nDATE AND TIME: Tuesday\, February 4\, 2025 (5:15 – 6:30 p.m.) \nLOCATION:\nPerpich Center for Arts Education – Main Building\n6125 Olson Memorial Highway\nGolden Valley\, MN 55422 \nABOUT THIS EVENT: We are excited to host a series of guest speakers specifically designed to introduce K-12 educators and librarians to books by Dakota and Ojibwe authors and illustrators. Each gathering features an interview and Q&A with the guest presenter and time in the Perpich Library to peruse our extensive collection of books by Native authors. \nTuesday\, February 4\, our guest is Sam Zimmerman\, a direct descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). Sam is in a unique position to connect his art and K-12 education\, having worked more than 20 years as a special education teacher and school administrator. \nSam’s art continues the Anishinaabe tradition of storytelling with themes of environmental stewardship and conservation. His first book\, Following My Spirit Home\, is a collection of paintings and stories from his first year back in Minnesota after living on the East Coast. His artwork is held in private collections in the United States and abroad and in public installations in the Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center\, Voyageur National Park\, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, and the communities of Duluth and Grand Marais. Sam has received grant awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council\, Northland Foundation Maada’ookiing\, and Duluth Superior Community Foundation. \nThe first 40 people attending this event will receive a copy of How the Birds Got their Songs (2024) by Travis Zimmerman\, illustrated by Sam Zimmerman. \nDETAILS: \n\nThere is no cost to attend the Native Authors series.\nLight snacks will be provided.\nA clock hours form will be available following the session.\nShortly after February 4\, a video recording of the interview will be posted on the Perpich Center’s Native Authors & Artists webpage.

We’ll also consider connections that can be made to your standards-related curriculum and how you can select authentic and appropriate resources. Recommended book lists will be shared.\n \nIn this session\, excerpts from interviews with each author and artist/illustrator are taken from the Perpich Center’s Native Authors and Artists Series. DESCRIPTION:TICKET RESERVATION LINK \nCapstone Exhibition 2025 \nCapstone gives artists of both Visual Arts and Media Arts the opportunity to devote themselves to a long term\, sustained\, multi-week project with the goal of showcasing individual and personal artistic endeavors including skill development\, refined techniques\, medium explorations\, and overall risk taking that highlights students interests and growth. The Capstone Gallery Exhibition is entirely student-driven\, beginning with original concept brainstorming; stamina building as a studio artist in creating and critiquing artwork; collaborating with visiting designer to create marketing materials; repairing\, prepping\, and laying out their physical gallery space; installing work; marketing; committee duties for opening night; and removing and repairing of individual exhibition space. \nWe hope you can join us!

Kim writes in many genres including Native American fiction\, non-fiction\, YA\, and children’s books. She’s written plays that have been produced\, too. Kim also enjoys sharing her culture with others. DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETS HERE \nPerpich Arts High School Theater Ensemble presents “RUNAWAYS” \n“Runaways\,” a collage of songs\, monologues\, and scenes about children who have left home — their problems\, fantasies\, and methods of survival — is Elizabeth Swados’ total creation. “Runaways” is one person’s vision. It was her original idea and she had been working on it compulsively for years. For months in 1978-79\, Swados interviewed and observed runaways; on the basis of this research\, she wrote the words and music for the play. It started as a journey at the Public Theater in New York and transferred to Broadway in 1979 where it received numerous Tony Award nominations. \n“When creating meaning for the play ‘Runaways’\, it’s important to not just go into the inner city. Don’t look to just talk with the child whose parents abused them and don’t expect that ‘Runaways’ are only kids. In this season of social tensions\, the Lit department has worked to create some space within which students could feel free to articulate their confusions\, fears\, frustrations\, and hopes. Drawing on powerful and incisive poetry and nonfiction writing about justice\, students responded in kind. Because their response to their world has not been limited to words on a page\, they are stretching their Literary limbs a bit and exploring some mixed-media art.
