
2026 RELICENSURE TOPICS SERIES FOR ARTS EDUCATORS – PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORTING STUDENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH

In January – March 2026, Perpich Center for Arts Education is hosting our 5th annual series of virtual sessions on topics required for renewal of Tier 3 and Tier 4 licenses in Minnesota. This year’s series addresses SIX of the required topics and each topic is offered twice. Examples of the strategies shared will come from arts classrooms but all educators are welcome!
PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR SUPPORTING STUDENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH
The mental health of our students is a crucial part of their development, but can also be a challenging subject to navigate. We’ll discuss some of the more common conditions instructors may encounter and how to best support students. This session addresses the topic of Key Warning Signs for Mental Illness. Our guest presenter is Mike Smith, a theater technician and therapist practicing at Cottonwood Center in White Bear Lake.
Offered on: Tuesday, January 27 (4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.) and repeated Thursday, March 5 (4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

- These are online/virtual sessions. The Zoom link will be sent to participants prior to the sessions.
- Sessions will NOT be recorded for later viewing.
- Participants are encouraged to engage fully with video cameras on if at all possible.
- A clock hours certificate will be provided following each session.
- There is no cost to attend.
- The presenter is Wendy Barden, Director of Professional Development and Resource Programs at Perpich Center. In these sessions, she weaves her 4+ decades of experience in music/arts education with the expertise of others to bring practical and important ideas for your teaching.
