July 15, 2023

Jeremy’s team led the development of envisioning the Supervision and Administration Pre-conferences. He was responsible for selecting the teams that reviewed and adjudicated all of the regional and national awards for the division. Holien facilitated large numbers of session review panelists who reviewed, scored, and selected hundreds of session presentations for the division to be included in the NAEA conferences which had online, hybrid, and in-person sessions in the NAEA conference in New York City and San Antonio. Jeremy also worked with the Board of Directors as they went through many policy changes for the organization, with the goal of increasing professional development opportunities for arts educators for the more than 30,000 High School Honor Society and professional members.

Reflecting on how his NAEA Board service impacted his work at Perpich, Holien shared, “I was able to bring back solutions from other states and school districts that I used in my role at Perpich. These included everything from ways that school districts were training art teachers for new challenges, but also in some cases to address teacher shortages in the disciplines. It also included ways to assess what is most important and create spaces for arts educators to find belonging, collegiality, and support. It also networked me so that I have a personal network of job-alike colleagues from which I can find support for my work, as well as help resource my work. When you are essentially the only person responsible for your content within your state, it is great to have a network of colleagues, who struggle with the same things.”

Founded in 1947, the NAEA is the leading professional membership organization exclusively for visual art + design and media arts educators. Members include elementary, middle, and high school visual arts educators; college and university professors; university students preparing to become art educators; researchers and scholars; teaching artists; administrators and supervisors; and art museum educators—as well as more than 54,000 students who are members of the National Art Honor Society.
