MAPPING THE NEW MINNESOTA MUSIC STANDARDS – VIRTUAL WORKSHOP
July 15, 2020 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am
FreeDESCRIPTION:
Here’s a chance to gain insights and ideas about the new Minnesota standards/benchmarks in music that will be useful in revising (or creating) your curriculum plan. Please be aware of the May 2020 Arts Standards FAQ from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) stating:
- The arts standards were recently disapproved due to lack of statutory authority, and MDE is working on next steps.
- If you’ve already started the process of transitioning to the new arts standards, it is fine to continue.
- The timeline for implementation remains the 2021-2022 school year (13 months from now). If the disapproval is upheld, implementation will likely be delayed until 2022-2023.
- The new 2018 arts standards are based on the 2014 National Core Arts Standards, contemporary research, and best practices in arts education. Supporting implementation will lead to improved instruction and learning for your students.
This half day workshop will be organized into three parts (with breaks):
PART 1: STANDARDS OVERVIEW, including additional resources to help students connect to “contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities.” Together, we will examine the standards and benchmarks in various formats.
PART 2: TAKING STOCK OF YOUR CURRENT FRAMEWORK, including foundational knowledge, ideas for assessment, integration of English Language Arts standards and Social Emotional Learning skills. Begin a gap analysis of the new benchmarks.
PART 3: TOOLS AND STRUCTURES, including a unit template and four mapping structures that could be tweaked or revised to fit your district’s requirements. Sample Enduring Understanding, Essential Questions, and “I can…” statements available.
Following the workshop – and throughout the summer – Wendy Barden will be available to work with you remotely on specific questions. Email Wendy to set up a time to meet: wendy.barden@pcae.k12.mn.us
Prior to the workshop time, registrants will receive a link to the meeting along with all the handouts.
There is no cost for to attend this workshop, and 3 CEU hours will be earned. The day is hosted by Dr. Wendy Barden, Music Education Specialist in Professional Development & Resource Programs at Perpich Center for Arts Education.
