Grover’s artist talk centered on their artistic education, career, and life as an artist. Grover compiled a presentation of their “art oracles”, which are pieces of art from your history that predicts the future.
“Turns out, the act of preparing for the artist talk was, by itself, helpful for even my own practice,” said Hogan. “Having to put my artistic career in a sequential order and explain how and why I got to where I am was a journalistic and exploratory act. I tried to reframe how I thought about the talk- not that I was nervous, but maybe I was excited! And even though my hands were shaking the entire time, the amazing questions from the students calmed me completely. I value the opinions and thoughts of young artists so much, and it was lovely getting to hear from them and for me to see what aspects of my life and artwork generated questions.”
“We were privileged to have local artist, Grover Hogan, share their artistic journey with our students,” said Kathryn D’Elia, Visual Arts Instructor and Studio Arts Chair. “Grover shared their artwork, struggles, and successes they’ve experienced since attending an arts-based high school in Texas, through attending MCAD, working as an art teacher, into their current position as lead educator at The Walker Art Center and their residency with Public Functionary. They emphasized the importance of documenting thoughts, reactions, critique feedback ideas, and their value later on in the creative process. Grover utilizes multiple medium in their work, from highly accessible materials like low-end colored pencils, glitter, and craft supplies, to oil paint and latex.”
