Perpich Arts High School Studio Arts Department Presents: “New Moon” Curriculum Exhibition
November 8, 2024
Perpich Studio Arts students opened their second exhibition of the school year on Thursday, November 7th, 2024. The exhibition is showing in the Perpich galleries through January 15, 2025.
Titled “New Moon”, the show features work made during the 1st Quarter by every studio arts student at Perpich. The artwork is made for classroom assignments and showcases the range within the Perpich studio arts curriculum. In addition to work on the gallery walls, there was also a media screening in the Performance Hall. Studio Arts students created the artwork, wrote artist statements, and prepared all aspects of presenting the physical exhibition.
Kathryn D’Elia, Visual Arts Instructor and Studio Arts Chair, said, “We are very proud to present our first curricular show of the school year! All these works were created in Studio Arts classes during quarter one. This show represents new formal undertakings, acclimation to a new school year, and honing in on their interests as artists.” In addition to the growth in the artwork, students develop their gallery layout, artist statements, and installation skills with each show. “It’s a wonderful result!”
Jack Schmieg (Visual Arts 2025) is a returning senior at Perpich. “I think it’s really cool to see not only how all the seniors have improved since we first arrived here, but also seeing all the juniors really engage with their art and how much they’ve improved. They’ve done a lot of stuff in a short a short period of time,” said Schmieg.
Ash Granzow (Visual Arts 2026) is new to Perpich and is loving it. “The first show really showed everybody’s skills and where they were comfortable, including me. I mostly did what I was comfortable with,” said Granzow. “But in this show, I felt like everybody pushed themselves. There’s a lot more and different material and subjects being broached from the pieces that I’ve read and seen.”
In the exhibition statement, the students said, “‘New Moon’ is a multi-disciplinary art exhibition featuring work created in the first quarter of this year by new and returning Perpich students. First-year students are in the process of developing new skills and learning about what it means to make artwork consistently. Returning students are getting back into the habit of making work and honing their vision. ‘New Moon’ represents the beginning of a year-long artistic journey. The show features drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, animation, photography, and video.”
Congratulations to all the students, and their instructors, on a wonderful evening!
