Visual Arts & Media Arts Cohorts Kickoff Work in November
November 24, 2025
This month, three statewide cohorts—Elementary Visual Arts, Media Arts Introduction, and Media Arts Advanced—met for their first of three workshops. In each cohort, participants pushed their practice forward through hands-on learning, standards-driven design, and thoughtful conversation about what high-quality arts education actually demands. Across all groups, teachers developed shared language, sharpened their understanding of artistic literacy, and experimented with practical strategies they are taking back to their classrooms.
The cohorts are facilitated by Jeremy Holien, Visual & Media Arts Education Specialist at Perpich Center. When asked what the three cohorts have in common, he remarked, “The through-line? More intentional teaching, more authentic student agency, and a clearer sense of how to design for transfer rather than tasks. I would also add, we value participants being able to collaborate and share ideas with others who have similar teaching roles in their schools.”
One of the participants in the Elementary Art cohort said, “The best part of the workshop was the hands-on activities and hearing from others. Feeling comfortable asking questions and feeling like I fit in, even with no art background!! I am excited to continue the journey.”
From the Media Arts Introduction cohort, a participant reflected, “I appreciated access to both information and other educators that are in a similar situation. Being able to have a framework to start from, instead of inventing or reinventing the wheel. It is nice to have access to all these great resources. I also appreciated having some time to try things, even if it was at a very small scale.”
Similar comments came from a participant in the Media Arts Advanced cohort, “The best part of the day was working with sound! This was intimidating to me, and it felt very accessible! I loved getting a chance to collaborate with others and hear new ideas!”
The cohorts will be back at Perpich Center in February and April to continue their learning. A big thank you to the administrators in each district who made it possible for their teachers to join the cohorts!
