EMBRACING DIVERSITY THROUGH CULTURAL COMPETENCIES IN THEATER INSTRUCTION

November 9, 2019 @ 3:00 am - 10:00 am

$5

REGISTRATION HERE

DESCRIPTION:
This presentation is sponsored by the Perpich Center for Arts Education and led by teachers Peter Froehlingsdorf and Greg Jones. In this workshop, theater educators, directors, and teachers who integrate theater units into their curriculum will use familiar play scripts to prompt discussion and self-reflection about the elements outlined in the Cultural Competency component for Minnesota teacher re-licensure (i.e. racial, cultural, and socioeconomic groups; American Indian and Alaskan native students; religion; systemic racism; gender identity, including transgender students; sexual orientation; language diversity; and individuals with disabilities and mental health concerns.)
In addition to small-group discussions, invited speakers in the field will offer insights and ideas around these topics that educators can incorporate into their practice. For example, one speaker will address stage intimacy, another will share her experience working with theaters of color, and a panel of actors will talk about their stage experience as it relates to these complex cultural issues.

COST:
$5.00 to be paid at check-in, by cash or check.
Snacks/Beverages will be provided.
Participants bring a bag lunch or can group order for a working lunch.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Middle School/Secondary Educators specifically geared towards those who use theater/drama within their curriculum.
