The Goose

The goose – a lit mag by LIT kids/students

“The Goose” is a literary magazine founded by the 2024-2025 lit kids in hopes to connect young writers from across the state and encourage them to publish all sorts of writing.

“The Goose” literary magazine amplifies the voices of 7th-12th grade students from across Minnesota, as the Lit kids ourselves are also from all over. At Perpich Arts High School, we have a lot of privilege to be learning art skills everyday, and our peers come from many disparate places to gather at our school. We hope to raise up the art of Minnesota’s youth and help young writers reach a wider platform. By publishing diverse literary pieces, we teach our readers our perspectives on the world. We are looking for anyone interested in writing who has something to say.

See below for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I have to get parent/guardian permission?

Yes, you do. You will see a place to input their email address on the submission form. Please let your parent/guardian know that they need to sign off on this, so that they remember and this can go as quickly as possible.

Is there a fee?

No, it is free and open to any 7-12th grade student in Minnesota!

Where can I find it?

The Goose is published online through the Perpich website. You can find it on this very page! We do not print physical copies, but the PDF is available to anyone.

What format should I use to submit?

Please use .doc, .docx, .pdf to submit your written piece. Font will be changed to match the other pieces in the finished magazine. Please do not include images with your text.

What is flash fiction?

Flash fiction is a genre that utilizes brevity. It is a short story or scene that is usually under 200 words, but it can be more or less. It is very simply a short short story! Kids these days with their attention spans and such.

Can I submit images, songs?

No. At least not yet!

Do I have to use my real name?

Yes. Because we publish student work, this is an important detail. We can use a preferred name for publishing it. Please contact thegoose@pcae.k12.mn.us for further questions.

When is it published?

It will be published in early May. We will send emails out to folks who got in, alerting them that their work is now viewable. You will find it on this very website!

Do I get an award?

No, we do not submit your works into any competitions. You can think of being published as an award though!

Why does this exist?

Because we believe in empowering high schoolers and uplifting their voices! We are highschoolers ourselves, and getting published is a real pain sometimes. We know that you have art to express, and we know there are people who want to read it. We want to celebrate our creativity.

Editor Bios

Danny Schiffer
Hi, I’m a class of 2025 lit kid at Perpich, and I’m an editor for The Goose! I love reading short stories and poetry, and I specialize in spooky ones. I like to write things that focus on humanity’s connection to nature, the paranormal, and the future. Writing is to help us imagine what is possible, and who better to express this than youth?

“Perpich is the best school for me because it provides a diverse student population, artistic environment, and academic opportunities that can't be found anywhere else in the state.”

Literary Arts Student from Plymouth

“My teachers encourage me to push myself outside of my comfort zone and to always strive to better my art, never settling for good enough.”

Theater Student from Sartell

"For 17 years I’d carried the bulk of my children’s education myself. Sending the two oldest away to Perpich was a huge step of faith and I have not been disappointed. The teachers, in particular, have been fabulous!"

Perpich Arts High School Parent

"[Perpich] was a hugely formative experience for me and I think gave me many of the tools to get to this point of doing meaningful work that I love."

Andrew Edman (Visual Arts 2005)

“From the moment I came to Perpich, it was like a college campus, with an emphasis on independence and finding your own self, with training in academics and becoming an artist.”
