Perpich Arts High School faculty and professional artists from the community offer outstanding arts experiences for Perpich Summer Camp 2026. Camps are offered in half-day sessions with the option to create a full-day experience. For students entering 6th grade – 10th grade in the 2026-2027 school year. Early bird deadline to register is Friday, February 27th. Registration closes Friday, April 3rd.

Have you always wanted to play guitar, but for whatever reason, never really tried? Maybe now is the time to give it a shot! You might be surprised how much you can learn in a week’s time, dedicating a few hours a day to learning this versatile instrument! And, like riding a bicycle, once you learn, you will never forget and, thus, can look forward to years of enjoyment spending time with your new six-stringed friend! Take advantage of this opportunity to hang out with Bob Frey for a week and learn the foundations of guitar – tuning, chords, strum patterns, fingerpicking patterns, etc. ***Students should bring their own guitar. If you do not have a guitar, Perpich may be able to provide one. THIS IS A BEGINNING GUITAR COURSE. Students will learn a folk/classical foundation that can serve as a starting point for any type of style, e.g. Folk, Classical, Rock, Jazz, etc.

Bob Frey began teaching at Perpich Arts High School in 2002. Bob has performed in Minneapolis as a singer-songwriter since 1993 and continues to write, play, and perform around the Cities and beyond. African Movement: Grounded Rhythm and Contemporary Flow

This dynamic movement class invites students to explore the energy, rhythm, and cultural depth of African dance forms. Students will develop agility, strength, and embodied musicality through quick footwork, step and drill combinations, and vibrant Caribbean influences. The class encourages dancers to move and explore traditional and contemporary styles. Open to movers of all backgrounds, this experience offers both physical and cultural resonance.
Instructor: Davente Gilreath
Davente Gilreath was born and raised in Minneapolis. His dance training began at Perpich Center for Arts Education where he was exposed to styles of dance including modern, ballet, jazz, African, and contact improvisation. Gilreath furthered his dance training at the University of Minnesota where he worked with professors such as Ananya Chatterjea, Erin Thompson, and Toni Pierce‐Sands. During this time he was also able to perform and create work with Minnesota‐based companies such as Threads Dance Project and Contempo Physical Dance (with Marciano Silva dos Santos). Gilreath joined Garth Fagan Dance in 2014 and during his 8 years with the company, performed numerous key works from the Fagan cannon around the country including new works choreographed by PJ Pennewell, the company director. He was promoted to senior company member and appointed the Director of the Garth Fagan Dance Student Ensemble. He also taught Intermediate/Advanced Fagan Technique for the Garth Fagan Dance School and for the Garth Fagan Summer Movement Institute. Gilreath is now a dance instructor at The University of Minnesota where he teaches Contemporary, African Diasporic Movement, and Jazz. In the last 3 years since returning to Minneapolis, he has danced for choreographers Joe Chvala, Darrius Strong, and is in his second season with Ananya Dance Theatre. He has set choreography for senior students at TU Dance, Perpich Center for Arts Education, Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists, PiM Arts, and in his own solo work “Rumination”, which premiered in Choreographers’ Evening, Walker Art Center, Nov. 2024.

Together, we will discuss different forms of creative writing, layout of a magazine, and editing one another’s work to create something amazing!

Ryan joined the Perpich Arts High School staff as an English teacher in 2024. He earned his B.A. in English from the University of Minnesota in 2015, then went on to earn his teaching licensure and Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree from Hamline University. Ryan began his teaching career at Parnassus Preparatory School in Maple Grove, Minnesota before moving to Minneapolis Public Schools. Ryan has taught IB English Literature, journalism, multicultural literature, and was the advisor for the student newspaper at his previous school. He is extremely excited to bring his experience and passion for creating inclusivity in the English classroom to Perpich! In addition to teaching, Ryan has worked as a freelance writer for a variety of publications. He has previously written for City Pages, The Twin Cities Daily Planet, Eater Twin Cities, Line of Best Fit, Under the Radar Magazine, and others. His writing focuses mostly on music and pop culture, but covers anything from food to politics in the Twin Cities.

This camp offering will cover observational drawing, perspective, measurement, shading techniques, how to set up to draw with your comfort and body in mind, as well as an intro to various tools and techniques. We will practice giving and receiving constructive feedback, explore collaborative art making, community building, intuitive processes, and a number of other methods to build up your art portfolio. This camp will help bolster students who are looking to apply for admission to Perpich Arts High School in the future OR for those who are looking to generally improve their drawing skills.

Kathryn D’Elia, Visual Arts Instructor and Studio Arts Chair, joined Perpich in 2017. With 20 years of experience as a practicing artist, she regularly shows her artwork throughout the Twin Cities and nationally, and loves sharing her practice with her students. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended Douglas Anderson School for the Arts and Flagler College for undergrad before moving to Seattle in 2012 to complete a graduate degree at the University of Washington in their Drawing and Painting program. Kathryn has been teaching drawing and painting classes to all age groups since 2009. She has also run workshops for special projects at arts nonprofits, independent-study-oriented painting classes for adults, drawing classes for kids, theory lectures for adults, and provided insight to the MIA regarding their tours for high school students. Build complex and colorful geometric sculptures using paper! Modular origami invites us to fold many small interlocking pieces and then connect them without glue to form three dimensional works. In this class, we’ll study the history of modular origami, learn to make simple and more complicated Sonobe constructions, and then research and build more intricate works to show off and take home. No experience necessary! If you like origami, Legos, mathematical art, or just trying new things, this class is for you!
Instructor: Mike Hodapp
Mike Hodapp joined the Perpich faculty in 2023. He is passionate about learning new things and co-creating classrooms with his students. Mike has been teaching since 2012 in Social Studies and Math at innovative high schools in Seattle and the Twin Cities. He previously directed summer camps, oversaw programming at youth mentoring and empowerment programs, and worked as a youth social worker. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College (Environmental Studies and Dance), a Master of Social Work from the University of Washington, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Western Governors University. A lifelong learner, he’s done additional graduate work in math and ecology.

Have you ever wondered how t-shirts are printed? Have you seen a handmade poster for your favorite band and wanted to make your own? Do you want to learn how to make multiple copies of your artwork through a layered, hands-on approach? This course will introduce students to the basics of screenprinting using both direct stencil techniques and photographic techniques. These techniques allow students to focus on digital, photographic, and/or drawn imagery.
Instructor: Jeremy Lundquist
Jeremy Lundquist has been teaching Visual Arts at Perpich since 2015. He primarily teaches printmaking classes along with foundations courses. Jeremy also taught at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Iowa. Here in Minnesota he taught at MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and worked as an Academic Advisor in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. Jeremy utilizes both traditional print techniques as well as installation and video while addressing a variety of social and political issues through his artistic practice. He has been an artist-in-residence at Ox-Bow, Harold Arts, Spudnik Press, Kala Art Institute, the Vermont Studio Center, the University of Iowa as a Grant Wood Fellow, and at Highpoint Center for Printmaking as a Jerome Foundation resident. Most recently he was recognized for his work with a McKnight Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship and a Minnesota State Arts Board grant. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Lundquist holds a BA in studio art from Grinnell College and an MFA in printmaking from Ohio University.

One of the oldest and most direct forms of making art is carving and then pulling a print from that carving. Relief printing is a set of techniques that combine both 3D and 2D sensibilities. Students will learn to carve linoleum and then explore multiple ways to print these blocks. Color and multi-layer printing will be covered.

She earned her BA in Eastern Religious Studies & Literature from Northern Arizona University, then began working on her MFA in Creative Writing at Goddard College in Vermont. During the required teaching practicum, Jess realized that her heart was meant to be a teacher. She earned her teaching license in Communication Arts and Literature and MA in Educational Leadership from Augsburg College. For nine years, Jess taught IB Design at Anwatin Middle School in Minneapolis while serving on the SEL and Equity teams, and leading Professional Development for IB Educators in Minnesota.

This camp will help bolster students who are looking to apply for admission to Perpich Arts High School in the future OR for those who are looking to generally improve their drawing skills.
Instructor: Kathryn D’Elia
Kathryn D’Elia, Visual Arts Instructor and Studio Arts Chair, joined Perpich in 2017. With 20 years of experience as a practicing artist, she regularly shows her artwork throughout the Twin Cities and nationally, and loves sharing her practice with her students. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended Douglas Anderson School for the Arts and Flagler College for undergrad before moving to Seattle in 2012 to complete a graduate degree at the University of Washington in their Drawing and Painting program. Kathryn has been teaching drawing and painting classes to all age groups since 2009. She has also run workshops for special projects at arts nonprofits, independent-study-oriented painting classes for adults, drawing classes for kids, theory lectures for adults, and provided insight to the MIA regarding their tours for high school students. Intro to Modular Origami – Afternoon

Build complex and colorful geometric sculptures using paper! Modular origami invites us to fold many small interlocking pieces and then connect them without glue to form three dimensional works. In this class, we’ll study the history of modular origami, learn to make simple and more complicated Sonobe constructions, and then research and build more intricate works to show off and take home. No experience necessary! If you like origami, Legos, mathematical art, or just trying new things, this class is for you!
Instructor: Mike Hodapp
Mike Hodapp joined the Perpich faculty in 2023. He is passionate about learning new things and co-creating classrooms with his students. Mike has been teaching since 2012 in Social Studies and Math at innovative high schools in Seattle and the Twin Cities. He previously directed summer camps, oversaw programming at youth mentoring and empowerment programs, and worked as a youth social worker. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College (Environmental Studies and Dance), a Master of Social Work from the University of Washington, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Western Governors University. A lifelong learner, he’s done additional graduate work in math and ecology.
Introduction to Relief Printmaking

One of the oldest and most direct forms of making art is carving and then pulling a print from that carving. Relief printing is a set of techniques that combine both 3D and 2D sensibilities. Students will learn to carve linoleum and then explore multiple ways to print these blocks. Color and multi-layer printing will be covered.
Instructor: Jeremy Lundquist
Jeremy Lundquist has been teaching Visual Arts at Perpich since 2015. He primarily teaches printmaking classes along with foundations courses. Jeremy also taught at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Iowa. Here in Minnesota he taught at MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and worked as an Academic Advisor in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. Jeremy utilizes both traditional print techniques as well as installation and video while addressing a variety of social and political issues through his artistic practice. He has been an artist-in-residence at Ox-Bow, Harold Arts, Spudnik Press, Kala Art Institute, the Vermont Studio Center, the University of Iowa as a Grant Wood Fellow, and at Highpoint Center for Printmaking as a Jerome Foundation resident. Most recently he was recognized for his work with a McKnight Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship and a Minnesota State Arts Board grant. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Lundquist holds a BA in studio art from Grinnell College and an MFA in printmaking from Ohio University.
- Lunch will NOT be provided by Perpich Center for Arts Education. Students attending camp for a full day will need to bring a lunch each day. Lunch time will be supervised.
